A recommend me a road bike thread

I've been idly thinking about buying one for ages, but not gotten around to it. A new job has provided the impetus as they have a C2W scheme (which it would be rude not to partake in) and I will be commuting by a mix of push bike and train. I'm in the shires though and won't be on the train during normal commuting hours, so don't need a folding bike. The new job also means more time at home - which in turn means I might get a triathlon or two in this year.
So, I know nothing about road bikes, haven't cycled properly for about 5 years(when I used to take my mountain bike out semi regularly), am reasonably fit but want to get fitter. Budget is I'd say about £600.
What should I look for in terms of spec and what is a good roadie for that price at the moment?

Have a look at the Specialized Elite and the Giant Defy range. Go to your local Evans and have a look around.
For your money, you will get an Ali frame with a carbon fork and a Shimano Tiagra/Sora group set.

You wont see Tiagra for £600 these days and even much Sora is rare unless you go a bit leftfield with the brand or get really lucky, 2300 is more common and although its not bad, its not great shifting and will require some regular tlc, still upgrades arent going to cost a fortune although you might be limited as i think its 8 speed. most forks will be carbon legs on an alloy steerer too, nothing wrong with that just check you know what youre getting.The Boardman Sport is the obvious choice, great wheels and good stuff all round, £600 to you and me.
I personally would go for the Pinnacle Dolomite 2 is worth a look too, they have a bad reputation as people just see them as Evans' "own brand" but they are well finished and offer very good value for money. £550 and £100 worth of free stuff according to the website so thats some bib shorts and a jersey or shoes and pedals or gloves and a helmet and some bottles/cages etc etc
