When considering an upmarket SUV, I am mindful that the Cayenne and Toureg share the same platform.

Now the Toureg is available with a V8 diesel. The Cayenne has the usual standard VAG 3 litre.

Granted , resale values etc do not compare. But surely a Toureg V8 would be a better driver, given the much more interesting engine?

I'm a little puzzled why the VW has the option of a V8 diesel while the Cayenne has not.

Must say that a barely used V8 Diesel Toureg ( which comes with air suspension and the all the toys) looks like a useful alternative to the Cayenne, yet no one seems to buy them.

What am I missing here? Any insight from owners?

OK....

So the Cayenne now has the same option of a V8. Helpful. But it's taken a year or two to bring it out.

I thought they were still all 3 litres as they were at launch.

Thanks very much.

The Cayenne offers the more sporty ride (for an SUV) over a Touareg. If you care about what other people think of you and how they treat you on the road, 90% of people like Touareg drivers, 90% of people dislike Cayenne drivers! biggrin

Although they share the same platform, the Cayenne was developed by Porsche at Weissach. There'll be some similarities, some subtle differences, but quite a few significant and important differences, particularly in chassis dynamics.

My accountant's wife drives a Toureg and they do drive very well. Not sure what resale values are like but they are very similar to a Cayenne BUT just not a Cayenne.

Driven both and a Cayenne drives nicer, more responsive that the same engine sized Toureg.

I almost bought one but the MRS was not having a VW when she had a Cayenne for almost 4 years previous so bought a diesel 2009 Cayenne and they are fantastic.

My farther bought a V10 Toureg purely on the basis it has a much less showy image, on the road it does look like a big golf and doesn't shout about anything when its in the work car park.

I have a V10 Mk1, its a great car, I tried a new shape but didn't think the interior compared in any way to my old one (or the Porsche version)and steel springs were way inferior to my air sprung one. Make sure you get the multi way electric seats too as standard are a poor shape if you have back issues. Otherwise the VW is good option.
V8 is the way to go though.
