After reading nogginthenog thread in the business forum, instead of highjacking his thread I thought it would be best to open a thread as I have a somewhat similar case regarding uni fees.

Long story short, I messed up one year of uni due to some personal reasons but due to mitigating circumstances I was allowed back on at a later date to retake those modules I messed up. I was re-enrolled at the site of my course (college) and I was told I was also re-enrolled on the university database in mid jan by one of the staff and I was told everything was fine and I started attending my classes.

A few weeks after starting I noticed a few others that were retaking like myself had already started getting invoices for their retakes and some even got warnings letters, but I was getting nothing at all. I knew the uni had messed up somehow and it would later come back and bite me. I decided to investigate the matter and sort something out. I first visited the universities student information and advice center, I carefully explained the situation to the receptionist and told her my thoughts about my enrolment being messed up in the uni database, Instead of referring me to someone she instead went though my file and said everything was fine and she didn't know why I hadn't received a invoice yet, I was told to visit the course faculty!

I managed to go to the science faculty with a friend and I was again told by different statff the same thing, again they had no information and I was pretty much told to go away!

Fast forward to late July where I had finished my course and living back at home, I was about to leave for holiday my holiday but I was called by the university and told that there was a some problem and I should follow the link I had been emailed to enrol to the uni database in order to receive my results, I did this and eventually got my results.

To my surprise rolleyes I received a invoice bill for my retake modules a few weeks after that phone call, in the regin of 1k, and was told to pay ASAP! at this point my student loan was fked up because of the lateness and also I was going on a long holiday, so you can imagine how fking pissed off I was, considering I had tried my best to sort all this before hand and I knew this would happen.

I returned from holiday but I was receiving more and more threatening letters through the post. Knowing how incompetent these retards at the uni were, I knew I had to go in personally to sort something out.

Eventually in November I made the two hour journey to the uni payment office which happend to be in the same building as student information and advice center. All I wanted to know was why the fk had I received my invoice so late and why wasn't I enrolled at the uni, when I was clearly told I was, again the person at the payment office didn't have a clue and I was told to come back at a later date but I demanded to speak to someone. Anyway I managed to meet the finance assistant. A fking rude boy in a hoodie that couldn't comprehend anything but ghetto english rolleyes

Again explained my situation, I told him I had tried my best in order to make both mine and the university's life easier regarding the payment but the uni had failed to give me a proper answer in order to fixing the situation. He went through my file and read a note left from the receptionist I had seen earlier in the year which said how she told me how my enrolment was messed up, which made me laugh pretty hard as I was the one that told her that! Anyway the guy was a class A prick and was trying to twist my words at every opportunity . Eventually it came down to the payment method, as student finance was now out of the question due to their fk up, my only choice was to pay them in instalments as I currently only work 14 hours a week, part time. I offered to pay in the region of £50 a month until the payment was cleared. He said he would speak to his manager but it would be unlikely to be accepted but I should wait until my case was passed down to the "legal team", as they would offer me a competitive payment plan.

A week later I was emailed by the guy saying the payment plan I had offered had been reject by his manager because I had failed to see them earlier than november, which was pretty ironic as it was their fk up and I have been trying to sort their mess out from January! and again failed to mention the reason for the massive fk up which I had asked the reason for a million times. I replied back with a very strongly worded email to which I was pretty much told to fk off by saying I should go see and complain to the faculty and I couldn't do anything else, this email was sent at the start of December.

Now in mid feb I haven't heard anything back from the uni since that email in december nor anything from the so called "legal team" to offer me a payment plan. I don't have a clue what to do now or where do I even stand regrading legal points. Plus if it goes to their "legal team" will it ever affect my credit history?

Sorry about the long post or any grammer and spelling mistakes. Would really appreciate some advice.

Don't let debts fester. Also don't spend money that you know you'll need to use to pay someone.

Sorry but you knew that there was a damn good possibility that they would chase you for the money at some point when they finally twigged to their mess up that you pointed out, yet you did nothing to put any cash away every month to cover it for when they did?

You have a right to be pissed off with them, but then you should be kicking your own arse with your slackness of setting up afund to cover it when they come knocking.

That's the thing. I did save up that money and I could pay them right now but I due to their ish behaviour I want to pay it in instalments so it can be a lesson for them, plus I would rather have that money aside for a proper rainy day!

But you owe them the money. If you wanted that money aside for a "proper raining day" you could always have not gone to university I suppose.

You are right, but considering I had my student loan all set up for this previously, the fact that I tried a number of times to sort their mess out and avoid getting in this situation but the worst is them trying to lay the blame on me by lying about the enrolment situation and also getting extremely rude as well.

Plus I never said I wasn't going to pay them but I would prefer to pay them in instalments.

You obtained a service, they have asked for payment for that service according to the contract you signed with them, and you have the money. Refusing to pay them now out of spite will not end well.

so because you have had a few issues with some members of staff, you have taken it upon yourself that the university must suffer and wait for its money you have owed a long time.

Wait until you are in the situation of owning your own company and how pissed off you will get with petty people that want to pay for your services, but on their terms just because your staff didnt say hello enough times or could only act on the information they had at the time... Not you or your companies fault, but its you that suffers.

Same situation to what you are doing to the university in trying to be a smart arse and making them suffer as a whole on your terms.

Yeah but if I didn't have my savings in place then where else would I have got this money from?! Right now I'm with with crappy part time job, and as you are more than aware of the economic situation, it's pretty hard finding a full time job atm. The only reason I managed to go to university was due to my student loan and with student finance everything was set up for the university to confirm the amount of money needed so the student loan people would pay them directly and when I would earn enough money then that money would be deducted from my payslip like a tax! That was the agreement from the start but the uni fked that up!

Struggling to feel sympathy for a student who knew in January a £1k will be due at some point, sat on the money, then got the arse seven months later when they disturbed his preparation for his long holiday, even though he only works 14 hours a week, by asking for their money.

Another 4 months go by without payment and said Student is teaching the University a painful lesson by still not paying, all because they didn't ask for it at an earlier date, even though the University allowed said student to attend the modules and even gave him the results, prior to payment.....

And still the payments not been made as he wants to keep the money for himself as a rainy day fund, even though the money isn't his and owes it to the university.

Staggering.

Read the univeriy's regulations on payment. See what they say about issue of invoices (although I suspect they will say more about payment).

If you can establish that the university has breached its own procedures, you will be in a stronger position.

If there's nothing in the regs, look for a code of practice that covers the finance office and look for the same kind of breach there.

Then raise a complaint citing these breaches (use specific clauses). The uni will hate that, but you might be able to postpone repayment until the complaint is settled and, if you establish negligence on the uni's part, you might be able to lower the amount use.

But you should have been setting teh money aside, knowing ha it was eventually on to become due.

The fact that the uni gave the results shows that something was wrong in their systems. Release of results is the usual stick to encourage payment.

I hope you are never a client of any of my companies... you are one of the reasons I only deal with up front payments...

If you got a service but the other party messed up the invoicing and had a incompetent member of staff dealing with it that has the people skills of a honey badger, does not mean you can ignore your responsibilities of repayment or try and find an excuse for not paying the whole amount...

That Sir is a disgusting attitude and even worse to say that the OP should raise a fake complaint to postpone the repayments as punishment.

Im assuming you have never been in a situation were someone owes you money (business or personal) and is using any excuse they can find not to pay it all or that they dont think its right after they have used its services for what ever reason... Its the lowest of the low.

Grow up, stop being so childish, 'teach them a lesson' are you being serious? If you have the money, stop being a scrote and pay up.

They couldn't give a flying hoot what you'd 'prefer', you chose to use their services, you agreed to their terms, deal with it.

If you don't pay uni fees then such matters do get taken to court, which could result in a CCJ against you.

I don't understand why I'm getting all the stick here!

The uni knew from the word go that I was in no position to pay for the course i.e on the ucas application when I was asked how I would pay for the course, Student finance was chosen and everything was agreed.

The uni didn't send a invoice, I attempted to do their job by trying to retrive a invoice a number of times in order for student finance to confirm the amount and pay their money but I was passed around to different departments and no one had a clue to what was going on.

They call me 7 months later explaining due to a error I need to re-enroll to the uni in order to get my results, pretty much admitting their error.

They send me a invoice 7 months late, when the academic year had ended thus meaning student finance would no longer pay up for the previous year.

I ask for a explanation but again no one had a clue to what the fk was going on and facts were twisted in order to put the blame on me.

AT NO POINT did I refuse to pay their fee. I simply offered to pay in instalments which I think is only fair as it was their cock up for all the inconvenience caused and they knew very well that student finance would be the source of their money from the start.

OK. Although your critics have you bang to rights, you haven't done anything especially heinous or which thousands of other students don't do every year.

And universities can be exceptionally crap at admin, especially actually charging students the correct fees.

In your position, I would write a calm and reasoned letter to the Dean or faculty manager of the faculty you have been studying in, asking for their help and proposing a reasonable solution to your problem. You could always ask for a meeting instead if you'd rather talk face to face.

University finance offices can be quite bad at flexibility and understanding the foibles of their 'customer group'. They're not usually quite as unpleasant as they seem, and generally commit sins of omission rather than commission, IMO. Best to bypass them for the mo and have a chat with the faculty instead.

Why ask for advice if you won't listen to what people say? confused
