Broken wheel stud

I was out today changing from track to road wheels and broke a wheel stud! It looks like its been damaged in the past and I wasn't even doing it up that tight. Does anyone know if its replaceable or where I can get one? I need one quick to go to silverstone on Sunday. I'm glad it didn't break a couple of weeks ago at donington or I might be needing more parts than just a stud.

did you manage to get the wheel off and has the stud come out ok ?

it is probably a ford part - i suggest you run a tap into the hub to make sure the thread is ok

The studs are pull fit so are splined rather than threaded, you need longer versions of a standard ford wheel stud....

Sometimes it's not be possible to replace the stud without removing the hub from the upright due to not being room to actually inset it from the back... Lets hope that's not the case.

I suspect you can buy the studs from eBay cheaply.

Yes the wheel came off fine, the stud broke off at the hub. I'll try and get the hub off today but I'm guessing I need to remove the upright? Any tips would be appreciated as I've not needed to take one off before.

Hi Jason , is it front or rear ?

sometimes you can remove on car.... its just a case of knocking the stud out the hub... goes out backwards of cause. If there is enough clearence behind the stud (you can rotate the wheel to find a place with max clearance), simply insert it and pull the last 10-15mm.

Once you remove the wheel and brake disk it should become clear...

Thanks for the help guys and I should have said its the rear. I've had a look and I can't see any gaps that will allow the stud to come out/go in so I need to remove the hub. Finding a new stud at short notice is proving to be a challenge!

I have a spare rear hub you could borrow... and you would be welcome to take one of the studs from it!

Going to london tomorrow... your that way?

edited to add that I mean complete upright and hub... think i also have a new wheel bearing on shelf but will have to look in morning when I am back, its a common item though E36 2.5L or porsche boxster rear, wiki contains the actual number

Thanks again for the help, and thanks Andy that's a very kind offer and I may take you up on that if I get desperate! I've located a stud from a ford dealer and its probably my cheapest ever purchase at £1.75. Now I'm off to get my hands dirty and will let you know how I get on.

I was lucky as it looks like my bearings were done recently so it all came apart very easy, infact it only took an hour from jacking up the car to having the new stud fitted.

Very unlikely but if anyone needs a new wheel stud the Ford part number is 1473166 and costs £1.75.
