Just a quick tech question.
Brake wear indicator came on yesterday. Now without taking wheeks off how do you know its not the rear or fronts? I ask as obviously on first application of brake pedal the light comes on. But if I apply the handbrake, without applying foot brake am I to assume it looks like the rears need doing as the handbrake on the 911 applies the rears only?

I dont have specific 996 knowledge but generally I would be getting on my hands and knees with a torch and having a proper look at each corner to see whats what and how low the pads are. If I had the time then I would take each wheel off to be thorough as the inboard pads may wear at a different rate to the outboard pads and obviously you cant see them through the spokes.

As above, just have a look through the spokes, you can quite easily see the state of the pads on both sides of the disc through the 4s wheels. Wear indicator comes on when pads are down to 2.5mm from memory. Handbrake works on the inside of the rear discs completelty separate to main brake system.

Cheers for that. Probably end up doing all 4 after having a quick look.

No wear sensors on the hand brake shoes.

The wear sensors are inserted into the brake pads. I've had a couple fail due to debris cutting the wire. You'd have to go a long way down the pad to get them to activate due to pad wear so it will be obvious if there's a pad too low. The wear sensors can be checked with a multi-meter (basic circuit completion check) if you can get them unplugged from the hub socket.

I don't know if PIWIS can tell which sensor has failed - suspect its a 15 min job from start to finish if your passing an OPC.
