Yep, 'tis true

OK peeps, I've been tasked with buying my father in law a secondhand laptop. In order to maximise his "laptop for buck" factor, I thought E-Bay would be a good place to start.

Now, I'm sure Ted doesn't want this to descend into a slanging match for or against, but some tips or advice would be appreciated. Mail me off list if you've got anything particularly nasty / libellous.

I've bought a few bits and pieces off e-bay, I think most people on there are genuine, just check the feedback
If its a £2k item from a seller with 0 feedback go into the deal with your eyes open!

Looks like there are few bargains there; people seem to be willing to pay a pretty full price most of the time - maybe they believe it's a bargain since it's on the net?

Good place for sellers though!

So you're not selling Virgins on e-bay then?

I've used eBay to buy and sell all sorts of stuff for some time now.

Remember, you're not dealing with eBay but the person who buys or sells the item, so it's best, as raceboy says, to check with someones feedback to see if they seem genuine.

I'll second that, alway check the new price first, and factor in delivery, just watched a Bentley baseball cap go for more than from the Bentley website

Is that Bentley the software company or the car company?

Greg, I bought my laptop off of ebay it was 9 months old with remainder of warrenty all the bells and whistles but a non big name make, it came pre installed with a full suite of office plus autocad 2002 (£4k software) and the installation disks. DVD, network card, modem, 800 Mhz processor etc etc and I got it for £600. Before the deal went through I got the seller to email me a land line ph number and full address etc they had about 10 positive feedbacks, I then phoned them to put my mind at rest before sending the cheque and what arrived was exactly as described only gripe was the battery had seen better days and only ran for about half an hour (also only 6 month warrenty on battery) which cost me another £70. If you need to know more give me a bell or carzee will be able to tell you if I got stiched up after the weekend when he does the network install.
