Road Junction - your thoughts
Discussion
Whilst a long time reader of PistonHeads I haven't posted before so be gentle :-)
Now I don't profess to know word-for-word the highway code (far from it) but I often ask myself "what 'should' happen at this junction" so I'd like to get the thoughts from fellow Pistonheads...
I have spoken to others and read various articles in local publications so it appears I am not the only one who is unsure! However, despite the efforts of others, I still feel many of the locals don't understand what is expected of them as they approach from either direction and sooner or later someone will come unstuck (if it hasn't happened already).
So, what are your thoughts on who has right of way at this junction, I've amended the image because Google Maps hasn't been updated for a while and this junction changed several years back...
Cheers in advance.

Well there's a stop and a give way. So the traffic moving up the page has no option and must stop. Traffic coming from the left and wanting to turn right should give way to anyone who has passed the stop.
If in doubt, proceed with caution!
And in the event two vehicles arrive at (or around) the same time, who has right of way? For example, a vehicle that approached the STOP junction has stopped and is now ready to proceed at the same time the vehicle that approached the giveway junction is now ready to proceed? Who has right of way?If in doubt, proceed with caution!
The only theoretical thing I can imagine behind it is if lots of people turn right off the main road coming from the bottom left, that's only a short stretch of linking road to wait in to turn right to travel off to the bottom right direction. That may cause traffic to backup where cars are stationary in the main road waiting for the queue on the small joining road to the right clear. Even so, a STOP junction there makes absolutely no road sense but MAY encourage people at the give way to turn right quicker?? Very strange bit of planning.

The stop line terminates that road doesn't it? So effectively the road up is two roads and cars coming up to the give way are at an empty road so would have the right of way.vrsmxtb said:

I think you're right, maybe it snarls up at rush hour and this was cheaper than lightsmaffski said:

Interesting thought, not sure though! If I understand you, are you saying that vehicles at the giveway junction only have to giveway to vehicles coming from the left and vehicles at the stop junction must continue to stop until all traffic coming from the left (at the giveway) junction has passed?
Not quite, a vehicle approaching the stop line would have to stop, even if there was no other vehicle. One approaching the give way would only need to stop for a vehicle coming from the left (down) or a vehicle from the right (up) that had already passed the stop line.Still a stupid layout though

What causes confusion is when you have vehicles at both the stop and giveway junctions and both vehicles are ready to move on and that's what I am seeking peoples views on.
I've seen time and time again when no one knows who has right of way and in the most part people are courteous and let each other go but there are occasions when i've thought

Perhaps I should avoid the junction all together and go another route! :-)

that was a close call!

I'd say if you both turn up at the same time then that road is empty - you both have the right to go, same as if you both both turn up at a roundabout at the same time. I'd go if the other person hadn't but be ready for the fact they might move at the same time. What causes confusion is when you have vehicles at both the stop and giveway junctions and both vehicles are ready to move on and that's what I am seeking peoples views on.
