Hello all,

Would appreciate any advice help on this one.

I have an '87 944 which last night had some big problems.

Started fine, then put some fuel in as a bit low, then after restarting and seemingly all being well it started juddering as though there wasn't any fuel in it. Then it cut out.

Managed to pull over. Left it for 10 minutes and restarted it. Again it died so left it again. Tried restart again and gave it some right foot. This got it running but I had to keep the revs up, about over 3k, otherwise it would cut out out again.

Has anyone had anything similar happen to them?

Thanks

Kenzle

Have you put any oil in it recently? Sounds like the oil filler cap may not be making a seal and hence vacuum in the system. This can cause similar symptoms to what you are describing...

Hi Kenzle, no I haven't put any oil in recently. Levels have been absolutely fine.

Another point is that the mpg guage wasn't registering anything either.

If you can keep the engine going at medium / high revs, then it clearly isn't a fuel flow issue and points to something like an oil pressure problem / seal issue?

did you use the wrong pump maybe? Symptoms sound similar to what would happen if you had.

This is a concern...

However, I thought if you used the wrong fuel it just dies completely?

Thanks Kenzle. I'll take a look at that.

I initially thought it maybe the fuel filter.

Not always - My Mrs did almost 200 miles in her 16V mk2 golf after putting £10 of the wrong stuff in - it was smoking like a James bond car when she got home! Stick yr nose in the fuel filler hole and see if you can smell oily diesel.

If you put petrol in a diesel car it dies much quicker.

Check the condition of your distributor cap and rotor arm too - easily done.

Right thanks Jevvy, I'll check when I get home tonight!

Part of me wants it to be that simple, the other part wants me not to have been so stupid!

We've all been there mate so dont beat yrself up about it.

BTW the 16V golf seemed to run like a scalded cat after all the diesel had been syphoned out/burned off so there might be a silver lining at the end of all this wink

Worth checking your receipt to see if it states what you put in.

Thanks chief!

Supersport, sadly I paid at pump so didn't bother with a receipt. Idiot that I am!
