Mtb chainset advice

I've fitted a new chain thinking I would get away with it and its slipping like mad.

So I've ordered a xt cassette as the alloy carrier should be kinder to my hope hubs.

Now onto the chainset.

Option 1 is buy the small, and middle chainring (£30) and hope the bigger chain ring doesn't ned changing. It appears ok at moment but who knows. Xt m762 chainset currently.

Option 2 is buy a M761 chainset from merlin at £85. Comes with correct size rings but is 170 opposed to my current xt being 175. But I could sell the bb as I've just fitted a new one.

Option 3 is buy a shiny race face crankset for £95 from ribble. Correct size in every way. Can I use my current xt bb? I've got these on another bike but not used it much to compare. How does it compare to xt? I could sell the race face bb too.

Option 2, thats a right bargain for xt cranks. Just fit the new rings to your existing cranks then sell the new M761 arms on ebay. You'll easily get £50 for them and you'll also have a spare BB.

Or just get some bargain basement deore rings as you'll not be able to tell the difference

I'm confused...what chain ring sizes do you want? That Ribble link is wrong but that chainset will have 22/32/44 rings I think. But you also mention getting an M761 but that has 26/36/48 rings right? You have an M762 which is 22/32/44? Is it a Specialized bike? Anyway, I don't think an M761 is what you want.

Edit - well I found the M761 on Merlin and it does have 22/32/44 which surprises me, if that's right sounds good. I'd just get new deore rings/chainset from Ebay for £50 or less.

yeh i want 22/32/44 rings. The merlin ones appear to have these even though m761 usually come different.

The raceface comes out at same price as XT with 10% discount code too.

Truth be told i want the raceface as they look nicer.

Always go with the truth, otherwise no matter how nice a shimano chainset is, the race face lusting won't go away. I bought a cooks bros e-crank like this many years ago, and never looked for another crankset since, money saved in the long run, using a judicial bit of man-economics.

I find XT rings and BBs wear too quickly but the crank arms are ace. So I have TA Chinook rings and a Chris King BB; extremely durable set up and super smooth. More outlay but it will pay back.

Chainset for £17 - use the rings, sell the arms.

Went for replacement rings for mine in the end. Cost £30 for small and middle ring.

Read too many horror stories about raceface , and didnt want to go down to a 170mm XT.
