Compare and contrast my experience of getting GPL working with getting *anything* working on my PS2.

After several evenings of fiddling, downloading stuff, finding answers on websites and google, I've reached the stage where GPL is playable - but only just.

Force feedback steering wheel works okay etc now, but I still can't get the damned thing to work with the DirctX D3Dpatch and my Matrox G400 - just bombs as soon as you load it up.

So I'm stuck with software rendering unless I want to completely rebuild my PC (no!) or buy a new graphics card with which the D3D patch is known to work (No!).

Other people seem to have D3D working with with a G400 - yet when I fire up the game it complains that glide2x.dll is missing - that DLL is for 3dfx boards - why the hell * would* it be loaded for a D3D card?

GRRR:

The sooner we can have internet racing with PS2s the better. FWIW The technology exists - the only game it's used with presently is Tony Hawks Skater on PS2. Wicked game but it's not motor racing.

Is that just a general rant or are you looking for some help?

Help welcome, Stuart, yes

Although, it irritates me that I'm supposedly knoweldgeable in these matters and yet without fail, no matter what OS or hardware, the game I'd like to play fails in some way and leaves me in dispair until I uninstall the damned thing!

that's quite likely - I've been impressed so far with the general experience and I've clearly got a lot of practice to get in, but I need the graphics to be sorted or it won't run smoothly enough for it to be worth playing...

Are there any more modern racing sims that people play online, or do we have to wait for GT4 on the PS2? Might be out before I get this binary-dinosaur rolling properly

Fear not Aidan,

Follow these simple steps and by 9 o'clock all will be well!

1. Uninstall GPL
2. Put CD and other associated stuff back in the box.
3. Put box in the bin

Seriously though, I have been trying to get GPL to work for, a long time, the demo didn't work and I borrowed the game from a mate and it didn't work either, I just gave up in the end!

FWIW, I'm using a Gefore 2 MX Graphics, Latest drivers etc and got the same errors you got! All the people I know with it working are using (surprise surprise) a Voodoo card of some descrption or other!

I desperately want to play this game but can't cos the developers don't believe people have different types of Graphics Card!

Not much help I know, but give me a slightly more detailed spec of your system and I'll trawl around for you, see if I can uncover any gremlins that you missed

GT4? Have you heard a release date?

Stuart - don't worry about it.. It's not that important. Would have been nice, but never mind.

I'm not criticising the people who wrote the game though, because it predates both our graphics cards. And OS.. and the rest of the PC I expect.

Have you played GP3 or (just out) GP4?

Back to the PS2 then... don't know about release date for GT4 - but I read somewhere that network play is on the feature list - that feature alone makes it a must buy.

News

Sony releases the first screenshots of its new GT title, due next month.

Sony has released the first shots of the latest game to bear the Gran Turismo name, Gran Turismo Concept 2002: Tokyo-Geneva. Currently, the game is only planned to be released in Europe and Japan, and it, like the other GT Concept games, will feature concept cars that debuted at various auto shows. In this case, cars are taken from last year's Geneva Motor Show.

Sony has no plans to release the Tokyo, Seoul, or Geneva versions of GT Concept in North America. Geneva will hit Europe on July 19th, and import retailers are listing it for a July 25th release in Japan.

We're expecting to get our hands on a review version any day now so stay tuned for further updates.

I saw that gt3 add on some months ago. It's just an update, not actually gt4.

Okay Carzee here goes I have Geforce 3 PIII have no problem with GPL with downloaded graphics and mom FF steering. You need the very latest 3dfx fix and patch. I use is GPL_3d3 and the patch GPL12_01 and then downloadsed extras such as revamped sound, graphics and AI tweak.

These are fairly common on the net (that website I gave you www.legendscentral.com/gplintro.shtml ) has copies of these and a fast processor fix.

Compared to GPL the GT games are simply toys which don't handle at all. At the moment I'm playing Colin Mcrae 2 for fun but for serious driving GPL is the simulation to have.

Anyway carzee hope that helps.

For all GPL problems go to www.racesimcentral.com and go to the forum. You really must try to get it working - the new GPLEA Ferrari 312 has just been released as well as the Sachsenring!
I have just been racing online with a few guys from the High Gear Forum and had a great time staying ahead of a Lotus 49 at Kyalami.

Must think I've got nothing better to do with my time.. come to think of it... I .. D'Oh!

Smeagol - I'm all patched up with the latest of everything - like I say I've been fiddling with it for about a week now. Just doesn't bloody work with my setup.

What version of DirectX are you using? What operating system?

Also, I dont' see (a) why you need the '3dfx fix' - my card isn't 3dfx and neither is yours.(b) where you download this fix from - are we calling the same thing by two different names?

You've only spent a week fiddling with it??
The software has been around for 4 years now, so its fairly likely that someone else has had the same problems as you have with your system. I have a P3 450 and Geforce2 GTS and it runs fine on that - people are running it on brand new high spec systems too.
I use the Act Labs shifter (H gate manual shifter), which is great fun to use in GPL - combine it with a decent set of pedals (BRD Speed7 www.interactiveracing.com ) and you can practice real driving techniques like heel and toe and double declutching.

You'd think so wouldn't you? Well my searching of google, deja, every bloody search engine, list, forum and anywhere else gets me the same bunch of cack as every other site, and no actual technical nuts & bolts regarding the most fundamental question I have: why does it want the glide2x.dll (for 3dfx) when I want to play using DirectX? and where do I get the bits to fix this? surely others have experienced the same issue?

Apperently it works jus' luvverly for every other bugger

Hang in there! GPL is really good fun.
I've had all sorts of problems with hardware compatibility in the past, and at one point I had to take a Rage Fury 32mb back to the shop and switch it for a Voodoo3 simply because it wouldn't work.
Now I have a GeForce 2 64mb PRO/GTS running on an Athlon 1.4ghz and it sings.
I'm mates with the GPLEA boys, if you want me to ask a specific question on your behalf, feel free to Email me.

Okay OS = win98SE, DirectX = 8.1. The 3dfxfix is a fix for non-3dfx cards like Geforce. Thats probably wherer you're going wrong. The game was origianlly written for 3dfx cards only. The patch is to allow other cards to play. the link to the file is:
www.papy.com/downloads/gpl_d3d.exe
download and run in your GPL directory and it should work, PS don't worry about flicker on the menu screens as soon as you hit the 3D bit its cool.

Hope that helps
