One for the mechanics - flare nut spanners

Google is usually my friend, but for the life of me can't find the answer i'm looking for.
Can you use a flare nut spanner on standard nuts and bolts, or by their very nature, are the jaws of the spanner flared / tappered?
Only asking as they could be a nice addition to the tool box if I can use them more than just brake lines.

It's only a ring spanner with a slot in it, to go over the pipe. No reason why you couldn't use it on any nut/bolt that size.

It might not be as strong as a full ring (ie it might open up a bit under heavy pressure) but otherwise, don't see the problem.

Flare nut spanners are normally made thicker to stand up to pressure whilst still having a slot in them. If you buy a reasonable quality item it should stand a fair ammount of use without the jaws springing. Halfords pro range is a good balance between quality and price. If you regard the grip quality of a split ring as somewhere inbetween an open ender and a full ring you wont be far off having an idea of its suitability for your job.

They also have a lifetime gaurantee, you break it and they change it. works I've tried it.
