Hi all,

I'm sure this isn't the first time this subject has been raised, but would appreciate some advice and like to know if anyone has had a similar issue and/or solved the problem.

Here goes...

2005 Fabia Vrs - runs fine most of the time, general driving around town, etc. Runs fine on the motorway too, most of the time. However, when pushed the temperature guage climbs rapidly until it hits the red at which point warning light comes on. If I back off, this then returns to normal and carries on fine. Tends to happen when climbing up a slope on a motorway too.

Strangely, at higher revs on shorter non motorway journies, this doesn't seem to happen.

If I check coolant immediately after this has happened, it appears below low in the tank, but given time rises back to normal levels.

Additionaly, on occassion when starting the car from cold the temperature warning light comes on straight away (though the needle is still on '0'). If I switch off and then start up again, this rectifies and the warning light doesn't appear.

I know the 1.9 VAG engine does suffer from problems like this, but just hope someone can shed some light on how to sort. I tried having the thermostat changed, but no luck. Allegedly, the water pump has been changed recently, too.

Any help on this would be appreciated - obviously don't want to keep landing myself with large bills to try to rectify (Head gasket, etc...).

Thanks!

Can't help, but if no one else posts a suggestion ,head on over to Briskoda ,find the Fabia 1 forum and ask . Asearch on there might find a cause ,if it's common .

I suspect the water pump is breaking up, you could also get a block test done, very cheap and you'll know if it's a head gasket issue, it's likely to be either of these.

Thanks guys! Yes, I will post on Briskoda too – see if anyone can suggest anything.

And the other suggestions are worth looking into. I had considered having a pressure test done (is that the same as a ‘block test’?) to check for head gasket failure - fingers crossed it isn’t that…!

As for the suggestion about the airlock – that’s interesting. Had read a bit and considered a few things about various other causes, but that might be worth checking too – thanks!

Does anyone have any suggestions of a good VAG garage in the Reading area – any recommendations will be appreciated!

I can't verify their work as I never got round to using them, but might be worth having a chat with them -the website certainly looks the part hehe

I push my fabia on trackdays and Santa Pod etc, and it has NEVER slipped above dead 90 degrees in all that time. Something is amiss, and I would imagine water pump too. When was the cambelt/water pump last done? If yours is a low mileage example, it should have been done when 4 years old, so 2009. and if still low miles since 2009 (i.e under 60,000) then it will need doing in 2013 - so potentially NOW! biggrin

Thanks - suspicions are that it could be the waterpump - could well have been a sub standard replacement....

It is a 2005 car with 91k, the Cambelt and Waterpump were done at around 80k, but before I owned the car, so difficult to check what they fitted.

Going to book it in shortly, see if some tests can be done - just frustrating as it appears to be fine when idling or even when stationary / around town / spirited driving when raising the revs... It's only under load at higher speeds (usually on a motorway stretch, for some reason) that it happens. Just can't figure that part out.

I'm hoping it isn't the HG...
