160 GB ipod classic - good value for money?

I've had a recommendation for the above from one of the guys in work who seems to know his stuff about music players.

All I want is a simple music player, easily browsed with a good battery life. Is this the best fit for me or are there any other recommendations?

160GB is enough space for a gazillion tracks, do you need that much space?

A 16GB Nano might suit better.

I had one, it lasted 18 months before it died Was nice when it worked.

I've filled my 160gb twice over, and routinely have to delete my 'less favourites' in order to free up space.

Ripping MP3s at 128kbps (it was a long time ago, after all) makes everything rather compact; something around 9000 songs if memory serves, I'm not exactly sure what is on there.

I had some genius sell me an iPod touch ages ago - it's ok just manage your music etc etc.

No, I tell you what why don't I just buy an iPod that plays music. All the music I own.

iPod classic all the way. Will be gutted when they stop making them and 16gig is the biggest.

I won one before christmas, and am still trying to convince the wife I need it.

Unfortunately, I will be forced to sell it (still sealed in box) for about £150. Upcoming stag do forces sale.

Played with one in currys, gutted, nice little device.

I've had mine nearly 3 years. It gets confused & needs a reset occasionally, but that only takes a few seconds. Other than that, no problems. The battery life seems good too. I've got around 5000 tracks on mine, plus some photos and a few videos, and I doubt if it's much more than a quarter full yet. If it broke, I'd almost certainly get another one.

I almost bought a second one to leave in the box in case my first one failed! No one seems to be interested in making a flash player with a high capacity.

The one thing that stopped me buying the spare was the Spotify app on the iPhone. I can have all my albums and playlists showing on the device whilst taking up next to no space and then sync them to play off-line in seconds. It does rely on having a mobile/wifi signal available, but I generally do and it is much less hassle than keep syncing a smaller iPhone/iPod with my iTunes collection.

My 160Gb iPod Classic is now permanently connected to my car system, and holds about half my collection at any one time.

The edge connector in mine is buggered (after only 18 months) so when I stick it in a docking station or connect it to my car ICE adapter it shuts down. I always thought the connector would be a weak spot and I was right - it is stupidly fragile compared with other USB interfaces. Why the eff do Apple always have to go their own way with connectors? I notice that the mains plug on my iPad charger is a ridiculously tight fit in the sockets, you almost need a screwdriver to pry it loose - are Apple trying to redefine the BS1363 standard?

love mine, but still only got a 4500 tracks on it, its a job not to just fill it with any old crap though , do like the cover flow feature

My Classic 40gb stopped working a few years ago so i upgraded to a 64gb Touch. Recently found the Classic when having a tidy/clearout and fiddled with it but still no joy (the usual error messages on screen). I bought a £5 battery from ebay fitted it with the help of a youtube video and i now have a working Classic again.

I still use the Touch as it has great features which i actually use. I now use the Classic in my car with the auxillary port on the cd player. The click wheel is still so easy and great to use.

As for space my Touch is nearly full and i don't have all my music on it.

If you want big storage and don't need much extra functionality (i.e. wifi) then there is nothing else out there for the money really.

The one major flaw is the lack of wifi, so you can't stream any music with airplay etc, which is why I went for a 64gb ipod touch instead to replace my old classic.

I agree. It is a shame that they seem to have left the Classic unchanged for a 'niche' market who want the higher capacity, but it really wouldn't cost much to add Wifi to it.

I originally thought it might be to make way for a high capacity Touch, but they don't seem to have brought that out and the 64Gb is too expensive as it is. I wonder if there would be any market for a 'fat Touch' with the hard drive of the Classic mated to the screen and facilities of the Touch.

Had the same dilemma
battery on my 8yr old 30gb classic was dieing, and didnt have enough space.
so just replaced it with a 64gb Gen4 touch £220 still available form amazon.

Best reputable price for a classic was John Lewis £177

I found my invoice for my first iPod the other day. Bought in 2003, only 20 gigs and £320

I still have it. Doesn't hold a charge so it's just connected to my car stereo and sits in the glovebox. Stereo controls the iPod but I mainly leave it on random.
