Moving into IT Governance type role?

Afternoon all,
I'm an IT bod of 13 years or so standing - currently working as a technical lead and in-house subject matter expert for VMware virtualisation for a specific area of a large corporate.
As much as I enjoy the technical elements of the job I invariably get involved with each employer in dealing with frameworks and procedures. Thinking further down the career line and considering where and how I suspect consumers will be engaging IT in say ten years time I wonder if IT governance and auditing is going to be a more marketable skillset.
I do recall during a mini-pupillage with one of the chambers in London as a student that the barristers were clear that a second string to your bow was required to be really marketable in law.
So a question to those of you who might know - would the years of IT experience to date count for nothing in a move to IT governance or a solicitor say dealing in data related cases, effectively starting again from scratch? Or is it possible to move into those areas and maintain a technical element to the role?
