Just got a job down near Poole, would like to live somewhere within reach of escape routes back to the holy South East, am thinking of Ferndown - is it any good?

Sandbanks smile
Canford Cliffs smile
Parkstone smile
Coy Ponds smile

That's my limited knowledge.

Or you might as well live in Ringwood / A31 and play with the commute.

I've lived in Poole all my life. Don't know too much about Ferndown, but like everywhere, few places I wouldn't want to live.

I'm in Ferndown, lived here all my life. Couple of good places to eat , two supermarkets, schools are reasonable. Poole is 20-30 mins in the morning. Could certainly think of worse places to live in this area!

I grew up in Ferndown, my parents still live there. It's nice, many will say how its pretty average, but there are many, many, many worse places to live to be honest. I'd say its one of the nicer areas of the Bournemouth-Poole-Christchurch conurbation. Lots and lots of OAPs but services-wise it's pretty good and is well located for the A31, it's good when going down to visit that we don't have to spend an extra 20-30 minutes in the car driving around Poole or Bournemouth. It's slightly pricy, but nowhere near Sandbanks, Canford Cliffs prices.

I went to school in Ferndown, my grandparents still live there.

It's an odd place. It's not really a village as such. It's more or less built around a Tesco, though there are some lovely corners of it.

Christchurch is nice, but not easy to get to and from Poole. Ringwood same.

If you have reason to be in Ferndown, want good access to Poole and reasonable access to routes back (A303 to North, A31 etc), I would look at Wmborne. Better town centre and pubs, closer to the Cranbourne Chase etc

I think you'll find Ferndown isolated and boring. And the (two) pubs are full of dicks.

Wow, a few Ferndown PHers - I guess you both went to Ferndown Middle?

For quite a few years Ferndown was the 'biggest village in Britain' which kind of tells you all you need to know - its just a suburban sprawl that has been subsumed into the conurbation. I wouldn't even say it's built around a Tesco anymore, Sainsbury's sucked so much out towards it (though I remember when Tesco and the Ferndown Centre were built, to a 9 year old it was like civilisation had arrived!).

Certainly its a bit depressing now when I go back and walk up Victoria Road, most of the independent shops are gone and replaced by estate agents and charity shops. Plus on pension day, its like Night of the Living Dead and quite a number of large houses have been demolished and retirement flats built on the freed-up plots.

The pubs are sh*te though in the town centre, though the Angel down towards Longham is alright for a family pub.

Agree about Wimborne as a better town - that's certainly where we used to go out if we wanted a night out with a few pubs when we were at school.

I wouldn't call Ferndown isolated though, its only 6 miles from Bournemouth town centre. It might be a bit bland and suburban, but sometimes that's no bad thing depending on what you want.

Ferndown Middle and Upper, '90-94 (I think).

In distance, its no far. But your options for getting out are Longham Bridge (bad), via Stapehill and Merley to Poole (bad) or back the wrong way to the Spur Road, hopeless for Poole.

Agree on the demise of Victoria Road and the independent shops. frown

If OP is a multimillionaire and doesn't mind insane traffic in the summer, then yes it is!

Oakdale
Canford Heath
Upton
Lytchett

Personally I'd choose Wimborne, and avoid Hamworthy.

A little older than you then, I was at the Middle School '87-'90.

You are right about the trip down to Poole these days though. I went to Poole GS and one of the reasons being that it didn't take that long to get there back in the day from Ferndown along the Wimborne bypass and down Gravel Hill. Every time we go down to see my folks I can't get over how long that trip takes now, whatever time of day, especially in the summer with all the grockles.
