Good monitor for photo editing

What would you recommend in let's say 27"? I would use it with a 13" MBP Retina. I know probably Apple monitor would be the best choice but I really don't want to spend £900.

I'm assuming I should be only looking at IPS panels, correct? Is 21:9 preferable or should I stick to 16:9?

I use an HP ZR24W. Apple screens are fantastic but expensive and as I understand it Dell supersharp monitors are used widely in professional image editing.

Apple monitors are far from the best.

Look at the dell 27" sceens or the 24's

The Dell U series is excellent. But as with any monitor used for image work, calibration is key - most are very poor out of the box.

I'm also currently looking at monitor options for when I upgrade my desktop. I've been looking at the Dell ultrasharp range, either 27'' or 30''. Is that the sort you're referring to Rob?

Dell 27"s and up come with a factory calibration cert... Though a calibration tool is still worth while.

The 30" Dell (3008) is about to be replaced, so is discontinued.

I use a Dell 2408 and I'm very happy with the image, however I've had intermittent issues with the connections.

I've had my last two systems built by this company: http://www.chillblast.com/ including monitors supplied. They build desktops designed for photo and video editing. No doubt cheaper can be found elsewhere but their service has been good and they sort out after sales care promptly. The two high end monitors they sell are the Dell 30'' and the NEC 27'' (which is a bit more expensive than the Dell despite having a smaller screen size). I'll be using them again.

About 3 years ago I had a look at Apple monitors in an Apple reseller store.

I expected something rather good. What I saw was a huge disappointment.

Dell, NEC or lower end Eizo maybe good to compare.

On the other hand I have a AOC 23" that I know has some colour balance issues (one can allow for that easily enough so long as you don't need the colour critical in a 'product and fashion' way.) but otherwise is a pleasure to work with.

Apple and Dell tend to use the same LCD panels, the anti glare screens are different , the electronics are different and Apple use LED backlighting rather than CFL which munters the colour range.

I'm using a 24" Dell IPS monitor and very happy with it. Their warranty is very good too. This model is actually 16:10 which gives extra height and very useful for editing.
