After reading a post about the story behind the cartier tank i got thinking how people perceive cartier as a watch maker.
I'm a big fan and have 3 cartier watches and various literature about the brand and I am a watch fan with 18 in the collection to date.

When you see a cartier being worn what do you think?

Personally I think posh, expensive, but not necessarily that the person (owning or commenting) knows or cares about watches.

I have a Calibre de Cartier and my opinion reflects how others seem to think of it, the only comments I have received are similar to "nice" or "that looks posh/ expensive", not a tiny bit of interest in history/ movement/ etc.

So when you wear a Rolex or Omega people talk to you about the movement? Wow nice calibre 45 36 jewel 3million bob watch you have!

While Rolex, Patek or Omega are watchmakers (each of them in their own market), Cartier is both a watchmaker and jewellery maker. The designs of the watches are often a bit more extrovert, refined or "special" compared to PP or Rolex. They are much more a women's brand than Patek.

I love Cartier - especially the 1920ies and contemporaty stuff. Is is very French, like Hermes or Chanel. Stylish, gaudy, expensive.

I think the tank francaise is a very nice ladies watch. But thats about it to be honest.

Having said that I want to chop my wifes T/Francaise in for a Datejust. It just grates that she wears a quartz.

Bought a Tank Solo this year to wear as dress watch. It's function is to look good with black tie etc, so I am happy to accept it's strength lies in a classic aesthetic appeal, which overrides a requirement for mechanical substance or creativity - as such does not bother me in the slightest that it is a quartz movement, if anything it aids the case being super slim.

I've had a Tank Basculante (lovely classic Cartier style) and two Roadsters, thought both models were great, the only criticism of the Roadster I had was how quickly the bracelet scuffs up. Cartier do make some watches that really don't do anything for me but when they get it right, I love them.

I like Cartier watches a lot. Few complications, elegant design and not that obvious a choice. Some would argue that they are more jewellery than the paragon of watch sophistication, but I like to see someone wearing a Cartier more than any other make of watch. Something to do with an appreciation of style, I think.

People who are in to watches, who know I am in to watches do, yes. Although I don't currently have either a Rolex or Omega, but plenty of interesting vintage pieces purchased specifically because of their movements, thanks to a phase I had (as the wife calls it).

Nice enough looking watches. I realise this next comment could apply to most watches we admire here but they seem a tad overpriced IMHO for what they are. Wouldn't stop me owning one though.

I like the Tank.

Before I knew the history of Cartier, I had them down as a fashion brand. More fool me, there's actually some decent substance behind them and I wouldn't mind owning one as a dressier piece.

I think this is the feeling of most it’s a dress watch, My newest is a roadster and it looks just as good with the rubber strap as it does the steel bracelet so the watch has two guises dress and sport,
I also have a explorer 2 looks good with a suit but much better with a t shirt and shorts around a pool.

I would agree with the quality of the steel used my roadster less than a year old and the bracelet is scratched to death

Big fan of the Calibre De Cartier model. I think it looks great.

I like their history but not many of the gents models appeal to me.

I have always been a big fan of Cartier watches since I was a small boy, to me it implied sophistication & style. When I could afford one I went for a 21, which I loved & have regretted "upgrading" for a Panthere ever since I did it. I did intend to then move on to a two tone Tank Francaise, or perhaps a Roadster, but I miss my 21 so much if I can find a nice two tone older style with the rice bracelet I will have another.

It might not be the last word in watchmanship, far from it, but it is very cool & stylish to my eyes.

I haven't posted for a couple of months and apologies for resurecting an old thread...

I'm considering the purchase of a Cartier Santos Galbee XL to add to the collection.
Have always been drawn to the classic square dial and the watch would certainly be different from those I currently own.

Any views?
