My son has become a bit obsessed with it to the point he has taught himself to do it.

I find it quite entrancing and hypnotic.

Never heard that before. Fascinating though! It reminds me somewhat of the effect I can get on a synthesizer - adding a load of resonance to a sound and then modulating the cutoff frequency, such that the audible 'note' of the resonance changes, even though you're only playing one note. By doing this you get the fundamental note and the 'note' of the resonance. I can imagine myself wanting to learn this vocal technique. I'm not particularly interested in signing, but making strange noises... now that's another thing!

There is a lot in the film 'Mongol' by a group called Altan Urag (film also comes highly recommended!)
