I'm helping my brother in law who's 2003 Cayenne S is in pieces. It looks like the piston ring has broken up and scored the cylinder very, very badly.

So, where can I find a replacement engine?

I would want to see a copy of the service history and MOT certificates as a minimum.

The salvage company that I spoke to said that they get the vehicles straight from the insurance companies and they rarely see the service records.

I wonder if a Hartech rebuild would be more cost effective than £4k+ on a replacement engine plus fitting? Has anyone done this on here?

Not a nice thing to do but would it clean-up enough with a hone putt some new rings in and off load it. Cost a lot less than 4grand.

Search is "undergoing maintenance" again. I was going to call them first thing tomorrow. They have an engine with SH. What should I be concerned about before I part with my (brother in law's) hard earned?

When search is working you may not want to call them.

This is true. Last time was a Toyota Prius I spun a shell in, cleaned up the crank new shell thick oil and off to the block with it.
