Personal preference - I prefer pan/tilt but never lock the pan. Many here seem to prefer the speed of a ball head but once you've loosened it you've lost all three axes.
Long telephotos have their own mount so balance is better.
What about holding a Nikon 70-200 f2.8...or do they come with its own mount. Currently got a Nikon D600 with Nikon 24-70 F2.8 and Nikon 70-300.Long telephotos have their own mount so balance is better.

...and you want to mount anything of that size by the lens. Some of the collars and feet on Nikkors are better than others. I had a Mk 1 70-200mm and, apart from changing to a Swiss/Arca fitting foot which was even better built than the original, it was a pretty stable lens when on a tripod. (The 300mm f/4 is notoriously flimsy, though)Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
