Discussion
I have been interviewing for lots of jobs recently and have been offered and verbally accepted a job on Friday, I have nothing in writing yet. For this post I also require security clearance which can take 4weeks.
I have also interviewed for a contract job which I am first choice for. They know of the above job but don't know that I was offered it. I did tell them that if I was offered it I will accept it.
Would it be wrong to hedge my bets and take the contract job?
I'm not working currently and could do with the money. However I don't want to piss them off.
Thanks.

Which of the two would present the best gain for you?
Are you desperate for cash or is stability more valuable? I'd be on the phone tomorrow politely enquiring as to a written offer including a clause conditional on the security check.
You're not going to fail the security check, right?

As suggested, requesting a written offer seems like a good idea.
There are various checks branded as security and made for different reasons, it may be worth being aware that certain formal checks should be completed in 4 weeks but can take a fair bit longer at different times. That said, employers may sometimes engage and use a clause to terminate if subsequent checks fail. They may also consider restricting access until checks are clear (e.g. no or limited IT access or whatever).
Whatever you do, good luck with the new job

Contract work is such a transactional relationship, unless leaving in 4 weeks is likely to cause you problems in future, or you know that you can't in good conscience do it (as in there will be measurable effects on those dependent on the contract position's work output) I'd say do it and leave after 4 weeks.
I'ts MOD security clearance. not full DV though, I can't start without it.
I'll take the contract, the nature of the role although relatively high profile means it's something that can be covered by others, but it is a big well known company, so it may screw me in future. Although I wouldn't seek out that division.

I suspected as much, but be aware SC can take far more than 4 weeks too.I'll take the contract, the nature of the role although relatively high profile means it's something that can be covered by others, but it is a big well known company, so it may screw me in future.
