Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice about using this service for selling an item, and receiving funds from a buyer.

The transaction has nothing to do with Ebay, but the buyer of the goods has expressed concern about whether he has any protection when using the 'Personal' section of Paypal, and paying for the goods under the 'Gift' option.
Apparently by using the above ('Gift'),the buyer would be unable to do a chargeback.

I have sold/bought various items via Paypal, outside of Ebay, and have always used this method ('Gift') option, and with no questions ever asked.

I am now wary of proceeding with the sale,as to me,it seems I could send the item, and then end up with the money being grabbed back for no good reason.

So,my question is,can someone do a chargeback when buying goods using the method outlined, and what steps can I take to ensure it doesn't happen.

Please note the goods are in very good order, and as described, the goods are advertised on a forum and NOT Ebay.

Many thanks in advance.

Then tell him to pay for it as good and add on the 2% or whatever he wants for the "insurance"

This^

If he wants Paypal's protection, tell him to pay for it. I'm pretty sure it's 4% of the figure received which you can add.

With regards to the item the main claim would be if the item didn't turn up, so ensure you send it via a trackable method as the first thing Paypal will do is ask you for a tracking number and if you don't have it then say goodbye to the goods and your money.

A checklist I tend to do before sending anything of value, especially when payment has been through PayPal.

Take pictures of item and packaging it is being sent in.
Note down identifying numbers, marks etc.
Check with the other person that the address on their PayPal is infact correct.
Use a tracked service with relevant cover should something happen or the person complains.

I don't think you can fail by doing it this way.

Wouldn't a bank transfer provide the buyer with proper audit trail etc?

Not sure of amounts involved but I guess bank transfer will cost more than Paypal and in that sense, the buyer gets what he pays for.
