NEBOSH Oil and Gas
Discussion
Due to leave the Army this year after 25yrs working in the fuel supply area (not tanker driving!). Basically we build fuel installations to hold fuel supplies. Having done this 3 times in Afghanistan and just about everywhere else in the world ill now be trying to transfer this experience to civvy street.
Now i can get a job as a contractor in Afghanistan, Africa and other high risk places more or less doing the same job now with the going rate of $7500 (and more) per month tax free but your getting paid that for a reason.
Been looking at course and the NEBOSH Oil and Gas one seems good to have. Of course im going to do the General one as well but is the Oil and Gas one recognised as a good to have when it comes to going for jobs etc?

If you can get the NEBOSH whilst still in the forces i would highly recommend getting it as its not cheap, I have IOSH and it has served me really will in my industry (Energy Construction). One thing that concerns me though is your figures that you say you can earn in high risk areas......are you sure that $7500 is the money being offered in these parts of the world that you mention?
I have worked as a contractor overseas for over 11 years now and i have only ever worked in Asia, reknown as a very safe place to work and my starting salary 11 years ago was above your figures "high risk area" salary. If Oil and Gas companies are only offering $7.5k a months in nasty places i wouldn't give them the time of day, by all means look into what they're offering but you should be able to command more than that in the safest of places working in O & G.
NEBOSH is great to have and as said earlier it not cheap and on the intense type courses they need a lot of concentration from yourself as they're not easy either as you will get into the legal side of things too, plus there is quite a difficult exam at the end. Good luck with your venture but please look wider than the nasty places at what can be earned, there is some big bucks to be had and don't carry the risk of getting shot at either.

Thanks for your reply. My figure i quoted is the starting figure, i know other lads, same rank and experience are getting a lot more. Of course its all tax free and in some other places you get daily allowances that are seperate from the salary meaning you dont even touch it. The Army more or less pay for it so i think ill do it.

Depends if you are going to do the Nebosh Certificate or the Diploma. I will always look for ex-military guys for offshore safety or medic roles (and for technicians as well). We have a few here at the moment (all ex-Para regt for some strange reason) and the ex-military guys are always the best. If you can do the certificate first and get yourself into an Opco, then get them to sponsor you to do the Diploma you will be laughing. Most Operators give educational assistance. Smudge you old spunker!
I wouldn't set your standards to high as there is very little related work for us ex pet ops out here.
Reality is that no matter what we think of our skills from the mob the powers that be in civdiv don't acknowledge them.
I was lucky to get a job still within the industry but have a think, how many others, bar the Stan etc, have you ever known? There is a reason for that.
I would suggest using your driver skills more and go down that route. Good luck and I wish you all the best.
Oh and get of this site, you like trucks not cars!

As soon as I saw the reply I hit profile and saw the car, and then knew who it was! Hows it going?
Yes I understand our skill in the trade are not recognized and Afghan and the like is where the money is for us lot but looking at courses I was wondering what is good to do and "wanted" out there. Your comment about "my love of trucks" has actually paid off for all that piss taking I got from the lads ref I should of been a Driver! I have had 2 Companies I came into contact with during career who are expressing an interest with. One makes fuel tankers (based in Germany) and other inspects and cleans them (UK). I'm in 2 trains of thought, do I go abroad and make a lot of money quickly but worry about long term (Aghan closing) or do I go for a safer(in both respects!) longer term job back in home?

Mate for what it is worth I would play the long game. Yes there is good money to be made in certain areas but they are closing and there will be a glut of guys that these companies have a history with. You will struggle to get in with them I would suspect and areas will be very limited once the Stan has gone. If you look at a lot of the guys we both know they are busy doing retraining so they are ready for it.
I wasn't taking the mick when I mentioned the trucking. I don't mean driving but there should be plenty of work for transport managers or even the more specialist areas you mentioned. Or what about a complete change? I think project management is a good area. A certain Mr Gangly Williams is doing VERY well at it.
I wish I could offer you something here but there are no posts and motor sport is a real small market.
Which ever route you go I wish you well. I am hoping to come to the reunion but have to wait for the race calender to be published to de-conflict with it, but if I don't make it then all the best for your dine out mate.

Although be warned the Stan is closing so you may want to think about other areas like Africa.

Also without divulging too much, driving around Afghanistan in a civilian truck, i would rather walk through a minefield blindfolded!
KBR again now tend to employ local truck drivers. Its cheap, they pay crap and your expendable. If you want to drive in places like above, then join the Army. They will put some armour around you with a big gun sticking out of the top.
As for Afghanistan and jobs. Its a lot harder to get jobs but they are out there. A follow up to my posts above, im now in Afghanistan working for a American company but not the above. I sit in a mil HQ, safe as houses but with none of the bulls
t i had in the mil. And i get to call a American General "mate". Yes Afghanistan in the size of Operations now is reducing but read the small print when people say "we are pulling out". Inf fighting patrols and the like, yes that is finishing. Leaving the bases and putting a padlock on the gate for Mr Omar Mohammed to break in and use for his next 911 mission....im afraid not. But you need to have more than a truck licence to get a job here im afraid. Even plumbers etc used to be able to rock up to KBR Leatherhead then fly out for $70k plus tax free are long gone. You need to be a Project Manager with proven record, specialist in expeditionary stuff or what i do, annoy Contractors to see if they are doing what they are meant to be.
There are good wages to be had, i dont think there are many people in the region im earning but like i said harder to get into.

Whilst I agree with everything written above I would also add that if you work in the Stan you must also be prepared to dress up in period costume and pose for dodgy photo's.

Or kill some relatives, star in porn videos and anything else a small group of perverted people can get up to!!!Note to rest of PH, this is a private joke
