Well actually it's his wife. They are looking at a '79 911 Targa tonight but I thought the PH Gang could come up with some better options - some rules:-
1. It must be convertible/targa style.
2. Minimum 2+2 got to get the kids in the back.
3. Must be quite quick.
4. Semi-exotic type thing.
5. Max 10k

What can we get him into then guys?

Mark tell your friend to be careful, 10k is not a lot and you have to think about repair bills. My advise would be to save. Sounds boring I know but they could be put of sports cars for life. Which would never do.

I'd agree with a 944 convertable too - 10k would be about right. I'd have a coupe though

They should be able to get a newer 911SC targa for 10k.

With the sunroof out the 944 coupe seems not too far off a targa. You'd get a very good S2 for less than 10k as well. I can't imagine the back seats are too good in a 944 cab, given that they are pretty crap in a coupe.

Why not drop the exotic thing and get a mass-market roadster. Loads to choose from, modern ones should be decently reliable.

10K just isn't a lot mind. A bit over the budget would be a Peugeot 206 CC. Modern. Reliable. Open top in summer and hardtop coupe in winter. Two (ok tiny) rear seats for the kids. A bit of boot space.

Fun but hardle 'exotic' of course...

Well sorted Triumph Stag...much better than you'd think. I once gave a Lotus Elan a very hard time in a Stag.

Merc 380SL, there are also some 450s around £10K. Good solid car with all the image and the engineering most people could want (other than me that is). A relative runs one and thinks its great.

Depends what floats your boat. If you don't mind mass market or FWD then a Fiat coupe turbo is VERY fast for the money. Italian style, leather, air-con, "hello laydeeez".

How about an early (classic) Saab 900 convertable?

Reasonably sporty, decent boot, seats 4 in comfort.

And it ain't an "everyone's got one beemer"

Should get a decent one for 7.5-10K

The BMW e30 droptop would be the obvious route - reliability/performance etc, although not my cup of tea, there's so many of them, and they arnt that interesting or rare - only in my opinion, no offence to the guy with one.

If it were me, I'd go for a well sorted Triumph Stag, I've almost bought one as a first car replacement on a couple of my madder momments. 10K would buy a lot of Stag.

Saab 900 and a 944 convertable get my vote also.

Cheers for the replies guys. He drove the Porker but all he could see was a huge money pit.
After much gentle and not so gentle 'guidance' towards the Stag he has decided to go for the Beemer.
We have booked him in for his lobotomy and tunnel vision operations early next week. He is worried that the car won't pass it's MOT though as he doesn't believe they have indicator stalks, and is asking if when you buy second hand you get the road ownership certificate passed on or is that only available to brand new cars?

I wouldn't touch a 911 before 1984 as it will need to be run with a fairly open budget. Why stop at a 944 when 10k gets you a LHD 968, and these are leagues ahead of even a 944S2.
