What DVR/camera/setup for a road trip?

Hi Chaps, this my first post in this forum 
I'm doing another road trip in september around europe (Austria/Croatia/Dolomites etc.) and this time I'd quite like to take some footage of it. I've gone through the "Helmet/Bullet camera video" thread and I'm pretty certain that the GoPro is a good piece of kit, however I have some concerns:
If the last trip is anything to go by, then some days driving can be quite long and I don't want to get cut short by battery running out, or SD cards filling up. Additionally there might not be any hotels around so if it involves camping again, then there won't be any mains supply to charge things up. So is there a system that can record to a full/laptop style hard drive, and run from the car's 12V supply?
Primarily I'd like to mount the camera on the front splitter of the car, however if it can be relocated to the bonnet/elsewhere on a sucker mount then that's a bonus Also, an external mic has to be used which will be positioned somewhere on the back of the car.
Is it possible to add additional cameras into one DVR?
I've not really set aside a budget for this, so how cheap is it possible to do this? And what budget might I need so that it doesn't look like it was recorded from a 10 year old camera phone?

That's going to be a lot of data! I've done some battery tests on my GoPro Hero 3 White, but only on time lapse mode, the battery lasts for around 3h45 on a single charge (depending on frequency of pictures. The battery backpack would double that, but you can charge it from 12v in the car, I use an iPad charger (1.2 amp, rather than normal 0.5 amp USB). With video I think memory would be the problem rather than battery though.

I have however had a few issues with camera heads breaking, I've had 2 new ones sent out.
