Route 66 Hire car hire help required

I am looking into driving Route 66 later this year and would like to drive it in a classic car but this is very expensive so my next choice is either Dodge Challenger R/T or Ford Mustang GT both available to hire from Hertz with hire option 'Reserve this exact model' as opposed to 'or similar'.
I have heard tales of how when hiring a car you get to the desk and are informed your model isn't available but this similar model is when in reality the cars are by no means similar. Does any body have any feedback on the 'reserve this exact model' and if this really works or other companies that you can hire a specific car from. My other problem is that the Dodge is only available to hire from Chicago (to LA and back to Chicago) and the Mustang from LA (to Chicago and back to LA). I am finding it difficult to hire a really nice car for a one way trip from Chicago to LA.

Wouldn't mind knowing myself as when I was looking at Hertz last week I couldn't get the Adrenaline from one destination to another.
