Want to get back to education (I think) but how?

Now before I begin, I'm not looking for someone on here to tell me what to do with my life, more for opinions from you guys/girls and what YOU would do.
So essentially, my highest academic qualification is GCSE, all the usual suspects: English (B) Maths (C (I've always struggled with maths, this fits in later)) ICT (A) BTEC Science (Merit) BTEC Art (Merit)
I then attended college and got myself a Level 2 IMI in Motor Vehicle Repair, this was done as a stepping stone into a Motorsport Engineering course (It was a Level 3, so needed prior experience in a relevant field). I got my place on said course and just before the end of year one, due to lack of available funds (it was a 40 mile drive each way, three days a week) I ended up missing days and thus getting behind with the work, for this I was eventually asked to leave the course. Not a day has gone by that i've wished this hadn't happened.
I've always had that passion for cars and how they work, racing from a young age reasonably successfully, but again, money dried up so that stopped. And I think this is the kind of career path i'd like to take. I'd love to be in the development side of things for a manufacturer, but this at bare minimum requires an engineering degree. Now the way I see it, I need to get physics and mathematics A Levels to get myself on to an engineering degree, but having just scraped a grade C at GCSE level in maths, and only having a BTEC in science, I may not meet requirements? If I do, it'd be brain frazzling to say the least. Anyone know of perhaps a different way to go about this?
I've tried for some of the big apprenticeships (JLR springs to mind) but have never heard anything back. So really am stuck as to what to do now. I'm currently working, so not sat doing nothing, but this would happily be put on the back burner to get myself back into education.
I'm 19, if this makes a difference, hold a full clean license, have my own car.

Where there's a will there's a way as they say. Your ambition however needs to be tempered with your ability. Having said that, most things are possible with a little application.
Your desire to follow a certain path my have hurdles as you describe; speaking to those hurdles may open up some options that you've not previously considered.
I would map out my trajectory, what is needed at each milestone to progress and get on with it. Where are hurdle, real or perceived, appears, find out who can help you get over it. If you can, good. If you can't, adjust trajectory.
Difficult to be anymore specific here as all cases are surrounded by unique factors. Happy to assist in more detail if that would help; it's what I do. Good luck!

I was in a similair position albeit it was A levels which i jacked in for a job which i later lost down the line due to immaturity.
I enrolled at a local college to complete an Access to Higher Education course at 19, free if you are unemployed which i was back then, this enabled me to get into university if that's your thing but consider the increased costs nowadays, will your goals/achievements offset the increased cost of £5.5k or so per annum?
If not, apprenticeship i guess is the way forward, work hard and get experience then start out on your own.
Good luck, it is a slow road if you opt for higher education till you are 23, i know this because i'm 23 now but unfortunaley i cannot tell you the benefits and/or disadvantages as of yet as i haven't used my degree in the real world as of yet!
