Hi anybody had the problem of not being able to engage 5th and 6th gear on the Landrover 2, I have a 2007 Freelander 2 XS model, sometimes it goes into gear as normal other times it goes across but then sticks in place. I have to pull over stop the engine..

If the only way you can get it out is to stop the engine, it sounds like your clutch might be on the way out.

Thanks TGV , apologise, I mean stop, not turn off the engine, I have also heard that it could be an electric problem where by a switch opens the 'bridge' when moving to 5th gear, sometimes the bridge fails to open, hopefully that's the problem, and not the gearbox..
Thanks for your suggestion.

"Common fault" or "Wear & tear"??

Clutches are supposed to wear out.

Yes they are made to ware out the problem with F2 is that the Torque is so good people drive them in higher gears and when accelerating rather than changing down the torque just works its thing.

The offset to this is that a lot of F2 need clutches sooner

Hi, I have recently bought a Freelander 2 2007 and it is doing the same as you described with the gear selection. The car has been into the main dealer they could not
find a fault the gears worked fine for them. I wondered if you had managed to solve your problem as an intermittent fault seems hard to diagnose. I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts on this matter. Thank you

I'm having exactly the same problem with my Freelander 2 (07 plate). Recently tried to engage 5th gear, I was in the fast lane of the motorway, it went across to where you would normally select reverse and then when you realise you've gone too far over, the gearstick becomes locked in a neutral position and you just can't get into any gear. Had to freewheel it across three lanes of traffic to the hard shoulder. Once the vehicle has come to a halt, you are then able to select the gears again. This has happened to me several times now and it's frightening. Does anyone have any idea what causes this problem and how is it rectified?
