192 miles in one day
Discussion
N.B. Mods. I have Garlick's approval to post this. Please do not delete again.
I'm on the support team for an interesting ride on June 1st.
There's a choice of either 96 or 192 miles in one day around the south downs in Surrey and taking in Box Hill.
There will only be a small number of riders, maybe 20 absolute maximum, so it should be a very friendly and fun ride and 192 miles will be quite an achievement!
Details are here:

Anyone fancy it?

Actually if there's enough interest there may be more but it's quite hard to get people to commit to that kind of distance. Obviously if 100 riders sign up we'll find a way to make it happen but the rides are mainly small group rides with a very personal level of support.
It's intended to be rather different from the usual sportive type rides where riders are often quite isolated. The plan is for everyone to ride pretty much together as a group and enjoy the cameraderie and smaller groups work better for that.

That is incredibly difficult to achieve in practice though. Over those sorts of distances, the minutest differences in fitness levels will come out, so unless you pick your riders very, very, carefully, you'll end up with them spread all over Surrey.outnumbered said:

The ride is being organised in conjunction with a personal trainer for triathletes and ironman participants and some riders are likely to come from that pool but anyone who takes on a ride of 192 miles in one day is likely to have a high level of fitness.
The route for this has now been worked out.

It's a 49 mile loop and the start finish points will be arranged so riders can clock up the extra miles to make it 200 if they want to.
It's fairly flat for the Surrey Hills area because of the distance but will still be a nice ride.

Now if it had been a PROPER 192 miles, you know, point A to point B, then I would have been all over it like Homer Simpson on a Hog-Roast.
But LAPS????
AHM OOT

I did Bristol to Canterbury towards the end of last year - 187miles in some of the worst of the rain we had last year! Always feel better when I actually go somewhere because I know every mile done is closer to the destination
It's all about the psychology

(110 miles from North Wales to the Lakes, lost the feeling in some toes for weeks, and a toe nail.)I think my next challenge is Exeter to Clapham, in one day, which should stretch me. I need to hope for the correct prevailing wind, and get a decent route that's pretty direct but away from the hills.
In the past my longest was 124 miles from Land's end to Exeter, over Dartmoor, which I enjoyed.

Mad!
Two guys I ride with are doing Lands End to Kingston (where our club is based) - 280 miles in one day, I've said they're mad.

How long are they taking as "a day"? At an average of 20mph, fairly difficult on the hills of Cornwall, that's 14 hours in the saddle, non-stop! If they mean 24 hours, still difficult, but much more doable
Gunna do it on the solstice I think so leaving at whenever it gets light, and before it gets dark, think they worked out they have to average 16 mph or something.
The bet is that they won't manage it in whatever hours of daylight there is (I forget the exact number) if they don't they finance the trip down and the hotel night before themselves etc, and if they do manage it the other guy who made the bet will pay.

Most I've done in a day (as in out for a ride, then slept, rather than through the night) is 254 miles. Started at 6am, got back at midnight. Stopped for food quite a bit (big lunch at Red Lodge transport cafe). Didn't get bored because the scenery was varied.
The idea of doing laps over that sort of distance without people cheering you on is terrifying. Still, I will do a 24hr TT at somepoint, just not Mersey Roads. If they run the Sussex 24hr TT, I think I'd give that a go.
