. . . according to Autosport on a 2 year performance related contract.

Backdoor way into Ferrari to emulate Daddy perhaps when Shoemaker hangs up his helmet

It would be good to see him back, in a half decent car with a bit of motivation. I do think however that he has no chance of getting into Ferrari. They want FA or KR, or maybe both of them.

Stranger things have happened. Remember Piquet on a similar contract at Benetton? He cleaned up both points wise and financially

I don't think I see the sense of JV to Sauber from either side's point of view.
If Sauber really means business with the new wind tunnel and is going to have a go at the front runners, then maybe that will do it for JV, but I would honestly be surprised. Sauber has pretty much settled in as a solid middle of the grid Ferrari B team benefitting from Ferrari reliability.

I like JV but I think he misstepped with how he behaved at BAR and he wound up falling through the cracks as a result.

I cannot see JV at Ferrari and don't buy the theory that Sauber is a Ferrari farm team for drivers. Ferrari wanted Kimi but he was wise enough to go to McLaren so as to not be team ordered behind M$. By the time M$ goes to retire either Kimi, Alonso (and perhaps Webber or Button) will be the front runner and that's who Ferrari will buy, not JV.
