Here I was.. thinking I had some sort of engine
problem.. using 1.5 litres of oil now per 500 miles.

Then I worked it out... 15 miles per gallon, 33 gallons for 500 miles..

petrol/oil ratio: 22/1

exactly the ration that my 2 stroke petrol scooter uses!!

Problem solved. I always wondered why it had those strange kind of exhausts on the back, and why it sounded bike.

I will now just add the oil to the petrol and stop putting it into the engine as this will be easier.

Powerlord; you having any problems starting the engine or anything yet? And is all the oil coming out of the back as smoke? Just wondering how long it'll be before that starts pg out all over the spark plugs, etc...

Ah - knew there must be an easier way

I'd read up about how difficult it is to check the level. But I never realised it was as difficult as I've found it! It would have helped if I had asbestos fingers

I seem to have put in a fair bit, and it still doesn't register on the dipstick. I suppose you can't actually overfill it?

Yours faithfully

"Doesn't register" could be a couple of things...
1. It's just really clean, so it's really hard to see (I have this at the moment following the rebuild)
2. You're not doing it right!

nah it's fine. not visible smoke. It goes in for service on the 4th so we'll see.

Wonder where all that oil's going, then...

1.5 litres of oil per 500 miles and "it's fine" aren't two things you often hear together.

What oil are you running on, Powerlord... would've thought something like 15w50 would cut down on the usage a bit. Do get the feeling that it's delaying the inevitable, though

Apparenty synthetic oil doesn't smoke much when it burns? I had a Chim with incorrect pistons rings that burnt oil at a similar rate....no smoke!!

None at all? Before my rebuild, I was getting through a litre every 500 miles. Couldn't see anything whilst driving, but when I stopped at traffic lights/started the engine up, you got a cloud of it. Not the traditional mineral-oil blue colour, more white/generic cloud-of-smoke.

not visible. was visible with cats off. now not. 1.5 litre is still not a lot of oil as far as clouds of smoke goes.. I mean you don't get much oil off my 2 stroke scooter.

I'd like to put 5/40 in. But then again, I don't want the factory to say 'ooo we're not paying for that.. you put 5/40 in.. we recommend 0/60. feck off'.

there does seem to be a gloating overtone to this thread though... :-(

I still maintain that you can buy a shite load of oil for 2 grand.

Rather than speculate (aside: why is a speculum called a speculum thinking about it....) I will wait and see what Kerridges have to say.

I have complete confidence in my excellent warranty that has already proved so valuable to James.

Absolutely none, not on overrun or hard accelaration. Quite different to when I poured Redex into the bores of my Midget. Created a one man (& car) smoke screen!

Fantastic!
