Where to eat this weekend - In Edinburgh?

So, wife and I are having a night away this coming weekend in Edinburgh, I had a free night owed from Premier Inn and we decided to give Edinburgh a visit.

I visited earlier in the year for a stag do, eating venues were (sadly) not high on the agenda but I did find this gem http://www.thecitycafe.co.uk/ for breakfast, so that's sorted.

I also have a vague recollection of a pub I would like to try for lunch (can't find it on the internet unfortunately). So that leaves dinner.

We tend to favour modern british type cuisine in relaxed surroundings, so think belly pork and colcannon mash, gourmet burger, steak and ale pie. But not set on anything in particular, so if you know an amazing indian for example, please still suggest.

With a budget of the £10 - £20 for main course and say sub £10 starter, where can anyone recommend (preferrably with links to menus we can drool over!!!).

I'm a long way from knowledgeable about the city having been only twice myself, and stag dos on both occasions. I was especially impressed by the cocktails, and while I might not know Edinburgh, I'm pretty confident I know cocktails. I still have dreams about the Solera Manhattan: 'A smooth, decadent Manhattan styled potation with hints of chocolate, coffee & spice. Ron Zacapa Centenario Solera 23 rum, Carpano Antica Formula vermouth, roasted coffee beans, demerara vanilla syrup & Mozart Chocolate bitters'

I live just outside Edinburgh but am in the city at least 2 days a week so have eaten in most of the good reasonably priced restaurants

Browns on George Street is always a crowd pleaser

If you are after an Indian you cant go wrong with Khushis at the top of Leith walk. It is BYOB though for alcohol.

If you want italian there are bloody thousands of them in Edinburgh but on of the better ones is Vittorias a few doors up from Khushis above at the top of leith walk

Also the Scottish and German markets are open at Princes Street Gardens so they have plenty of stalls selling mulled wine and food. The ice rink and big wheel are next to the markets too.

Its also freezing cold, icy and possibly snowy this weekend so wrap up warm and take care.

p.s Describe the bar you can vaguely remember. I might be able to narrow it down for you. If it was near the centre of town.

I second Monteiths.

Found it by accident (couldn't get in anywhere else) and although they were booked up, they said we could eat if we were finished by 8. Didn't feel rushed - service and food were first class.

If / when I return to Edinburgh, it will be my first choice for dinner.

Thanks all, some great sounding places there! I've sent them over to the wife for her to have a look, then will call round this aft and see who has a table available.

As for the pub I recall, It was on the Royal Mile and looking a Google maps might have been the White Horse, however it was less traditional inside than some of the google pics suggest (layout looks similar though) with a relaxed cafe type feel.

Will let you know where I end up booking and report back Monday how it was

I went here the other week based on the recommendations of Trip Advosir and it was incredible. Not laid back engligh lunch fair, but laid back, evening tapas. Food was amazing, staff were awesome and it wasn't nearly as expensive as it could have been.

The bar and the restaurant in The Scotsman hotel were fab last time I was there which is a few years ago now, but might be worth checking out.

The pub could be the Albanach at the top of cockburn street. It faces on to the royal mile and its quite long and narrow. It has alt of whisky behind the bar. The food is pretty dam good there too.

Definitely not the pub I was thinking of, HOWEVER, thanks, that looks like a great place to visit!

I really want to try some great whisky while I'm there and that pub looks ideal.

Any recommendations what to go for? I was bought a bottle of 18year old Glenlivet a couple of years back and really enjoyed that.

18 yo highland park is supposed to be one of the best.
I know the albanach do tasting selections of whisky i.e 5 different whiskies so that may be worth a try.

There are so many pubs on the royal mile we could be here all week. Also it could be a pub from the grassmarket or cowgate you are remembering as they are very close by.

Never too many good pubs

Pretty sure it was on the mile, will report back and confirm which it is (if I can find it!!!) after the weekend.

Whisky taster session sounds like a good plan.

So we've gone for this! Table booked for 6pm, which is a little early but as someone above posted it is Christmas and everywhere is very busy.

Almost definately a bit late for this thread, but if seafood is your thing and you're back in Edinburgh again I'd recomend a trip to ondine on George IV bridge. Then you have one of the best places in town for a long time. The witchery, on the royal mile up by the castle. Always really enjoy both.

So we ate at Indaba, very nice! Though the early evening time really made it feel more like grabbing a bite to eat before going out if you know what I mean.

Drank some decent beer, and some very nice whisky and had a great time - though my suspicions were confirmed that it is an expensive place to drink; moreso than London I think.

Breakfast at the City Cafe was superb too, really did not disappoint
