Merchant City exactly where you want to be for eats and drinks...
If you fancy a sociable night out with a group, Sapporo Teppanyaki restaurant is a good laugh. Lots of reasonable Italians around as well (Italian Kitchen, Italian Cafe etc.) and you're close to my favourite restaurant in Glasgow, Guy's. It's not cheap but it is excellent.
As for bars, you're right in the middle of the nice ones so have a wander about (though if you're exactly round Central Station it can be a bit rough - Merchant City much nicer) the streets. Worth taking a cab to Bath Street or Ashton Lane (in the West End) to check out the action there too.

Yep, the short answer is head in an Ingram Street Direction and you'll be grand. Head down Argyle street/Union street and you'll deal with all the pissed-up mentalists queuing on a taxi outside the station.
Don't get me wrong, it's all fine to walk through but there's not much in the way of nice watering holes around the station IMO. Mainly takeaways and clubs.
Some nice whisky bars up the West End too, if that's your thing?

Oh, an idea has sprung to mind. Based on where you are, if my memory serves me well, you should be just near Gordon street?
There's a basement bar on the corner of Gordon and Buchanan called the Bier Halle that has a menu of billions of nice beers from around the world, absolutely top notch pizza and waitress service and it's not a bank-breaker.

Permanent 2 for 1 pizza deal too, and the pizzas are not bad at all - pretty good actually. There's a basement bar on the corner of Gordon and Buchanan called the Bier Halle that has a menu of billions of nice beers from around the world, absolutely top notch pizza and waitress service and it's not a bank-breaker.
I'm a fan of Lucky 7 in Bath Street - http://lucky7canteen.co.uk/
Pretty good value and a nice atmosphere. There's a bar there too

Loads of places worth trying.
Stereo, in Renfield lane will be handy and can be good fun.
West End has loads of options, Brew Dog if you like craft beer and a magnificent view (pizza great too). Byres Road has a load of options for food/cafe/pub.
Merchant City has some nice places too.
Is it just evening drinks places you are interested in? Lots of good visitor attractions too such as Kelvingrove, Transport Museum and Science Centre.

Well I went to BierHalle last night and very nice it was to. Good atmosphere and choice of beers and cute waitress. Even had the footy on. Pizzas looked good but didn't have one as they were a bit pricey just for one - 2-4-1 deal made them seem cheap.
I'm up in Glasgow on my own for work. So just looking for some places to hang out and people-watch etc, that won't cost a fortune, like sitting in a restaurant on my tod. Will check some of the other suggestions out.

If you're walking from BierHalle out towards Merchant City, I know they
now call most of the centre Merchant City but I mean the East bit, there's
always The Corinthian which is worth a quick pint, maybe not an evening
of people watching but worth a look.
Cafe Gondolfi and Babbity Bowsters were names I remember from my pre-children
days...
Have you bought a copy of The List yet, should pick one up in the newsagent.

The Corinthian is a bit like an episode of TOWIE these days, sadly. We were there not so long ago and I've never seen so many coked-up orange women in one place before. Ideal, if you like that sort of thing though, I suppose
You should check out Waxy O Connor's off Buchanan Street too. Irish pub that's like a maze inside...If you fancy a nice drink in the 1930's, Rogano is great. Gandolfi is a great shout too.

If you liked the Bier Halle (which I think is nice, if not overpriced (Erdinger-£4.25!) and effectively a studenty dungeon), find the Beer Cafe in Merchant Square, off Ingram Street & Candleriggs. It's more of the same, but perhaps a bit less pretentious, cheaper and you can sit 'outside' in the square under the roof.

Top pub.
