Settle an argument please (well argument is a bit strong)

I have always been under the impression that Diet Coke and Coke Zero are the same thing, just a marketing thing as some people didn't like ordering a diet drink.

My Mrs claims she can tell the difference between the two, but to me they taste the same.

So what's the deal here?

I believe that they are made with different sweeteners which gives a slightly different taste.

Like Coke Zero, diet Coke tastes like crap. Definite difference in the flavour.

You're wrong, she's right.

Coke Zero tastes more like Full Fat (Red) Coke. Diet Coke has it's own distinct flavour. I'd put money on me being able to tell Diet Coke from Coke Zero.

They are definitely different.

Diet tastes like Diet i.e. more fizzy/gassy than regular Coke. Coke Zero tastes like standard Coke that has gone a bit flat.

I've done a blind folded test because of this argument, identified them correctly 10/10 times.

They taste soo different!

The main difference is the marketing.
Diet coke is for girls
Coke zero is for guys.

Both taste like unadulterated crap compared to proper coke!

My step father can't tell the difference either! But he has smoked for over 30 years.

There isn't a huge flavour difference but it is quite noticeable.

There's a massive difference in flavour.

Mate didn't believe I could really tell the difference between them when I told him that Coke Zero was "slightly worse than Hitler". So, he lined up Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Max, Diet Coke and Coke Zero and asked me which was which. Got every one right across three repeats.

I genuinely can't believe that people think they all taste the same.

Coca‑Cola Zero delivers the great taste of Coca‑Cola, with zero sugar. While it has the same sweeteners as Diet Coke (a blend of aspartame and acesulfame-K), it has a different flavour base, though both are low calorie and zero sugar.

Do you think Caffeine Free Diet Coke tastes similar to Pepsi Max?

It's been years since I had Caffeine Free Diet Coke, but I don't remember it being similar to Pepsi Max. I remember Caffeine Free Diet Coke being utterly vile, whilst Pepsi Max is quite nice.

Thanks for that.

I'd not really noticed a difference between the two, but maybe that was because I always assumed they were the same thing confused

Diet Coke was formulated to taste somewhat like Pepsi (i.e. quite different from Coke). Coke Zero is meant to taste like full fat Coke. I quite like Coke Zero, but Diet is vile; I'm also not a Pepsi fan.

Zero tastes a lot better but I wish they would make one with xylitol as its flipping rotting my teeth.

Not too sure about the coke range but in the Pepsi range the difference between Max and Diet is the sweeteners used.

The sweeteners used in Max have less after taste but weren't about when diet was launched!

Now a little test for you guys up on your soft drinks; the launch ads for Max,,,,,, which brand were they really for and were swapped out for Max products after production?

Did this at a Harvard course on branding. Blind taste test to prove that the products are identical and that marketing is all.

Happily identified zero, diet, full fat and pepsi.

Lecturer not best pleased.

Oddly does not alter his premise from my perspective; the drinks are Marketing driven rubbish.

More fool me for drinking so much of them that I can tell the difference...
