Im sure you guys already know, but the mobile speed cameras are out in force at the moment.

There almost isn't a day goes by were i don't see at least one in their usual places, particularly on the A31 ringwood - ferndown etc, and i dont travel much at all usually.

They have a new spot just over the hill past the St Leonards hotel towards Ferndown as you come down the hill before the kennels, not after where they normally sit, although they still use that spot.

Also to add, i was heading East on the same stretch at around 4.30pm and noticed them over the central reservation.

I went past heading to Ferndown at around 7.30pm and they were STILL there!

Keep your eyes peeled

I have it on very good authority that you should not speed through Hursley...

Hursley has put up two SpeedSpike ANPR cameras. One on entry and one on exit of the village. A new system based on the London congestion charge system that basically calculates average speed.

They are being trialled in the village as hursley is obsessed with its 30mph zone..

No warning signs up at all, of any kind, camera or average speed check type, so an interesting court case if any one gets done. After all the objective is to warn drivers so that they reduce their speed, rather than to leave them speeding so they simply get fined. Yer right......

Enjoy.

There has always been an obsession about speed through Hursley and in my view, rightly. I travel through Hursley early every morning to get to Winchester station and some of the speeds I've seen are crazy. There's a derestricted zone either side of Hursley and some drivers don't slow down in the middle. If they caught, serves them right...

Slightly off topic but as we're talking about Hursley anyway: There is also a concern with cyclists using the bottom end of Hursley Road as it is very narrow and cars cannot overtake on it easily particularly if the cyclist is going uphill. There are already signs in place telling cyclists that the road is not suitable for them but they can't be banned from using it (as I understand) as it is a public road. One day there will be a nasty accident and I am afraid to say that it will be a cyclist that gets hurt...

Thanks to the OP for the heads up re the other speed cameras.

Agreed. I live a few miles from Hursley, and it's a busy little village with lots of pedestrians, cyclists and children floating around, with a school there too.

I use appropriate speed for the conditions on roads, and HATE the blanket reduction in speed limits that tar all drivers with the same brush - but regarding Hursley, I have no problem with a 30 limit actually. It's sensible and proportionate for the conditions I think. And besides, it's only for a mile or so - surely won't make a difference to most drivers for such a short period of time?

These kind of speed limits and enforcement = ok.

50mph limits on deserted, well-sighted sections of rural single carriageway that used to be de-restricted though? Bah! frown

Agreed. In part. I travel through Hursley twice a day, my problem is not with the limit, but the way it is enforced. I now know the camera is there, so I will be glancing at my speedo more often than I otherwise wold, each time removing my eyes from the road. How does this increase safety?

Hi,

Just to let you know Hursley have recently put up the speed camera signs, so can only guess the trail was successful and are now in operation. But there is no mention that it records your average speed, which is a MUST.

If their aim is to keep drivers within the speed limit throughout the village it needs to state that it records average speed, so drivers are aware and will watch their speed, instead of speeding back up after passing the camera. If drivers travel that way often, and are not aware they could be without a licence at the end of the month.

But, as there is no mention of it recording your average speed, I don't think that they will have a leg to stand on when it comes to challenging it.

There seems to be a huge Police presence around Ringwood / Ferndown lately. I suspect it's down to Dorset road deaths increasing in 2012, it's being blamed on police cuts. I also saw a mobile cameras on the A31 today just near the little chef heading towards Ringwood. Pretty sure they caught a lot too as people were flying past me!

'Apparently' they use these spots n the A31 to top up their target.

And it is near the end of the month.

They also seem to like setting up on the spur road just after the 50 heading south in the usual spot EARLY on Sunday mornings as well.

I guess they think that motorists wont be expecting it at that time.
