Would anyone still want to buy my car ?
Discussion
I have owned my 996 for nearly 3 years now and only done 5k since ive owned it, Now my problem is the car has full opc history to date and is due for a service in the next few weeks but i was thinking of servicing the car myself from now on so would have no more stamps in the book, do you guys think this would stop anyone wanting to buy my car when the time comes to sell?

Maybe not unsaleable but you will have to mark it down by more than you save IMHOturk1 said:

I wouldn't touch a modern car that hadn't been professionally serviced - there is no guarantee that the work has been done to required standards and the sheer amount of electronics means that you need specialist diagnostic tools to effectively checklist and service. Older cars, I would be more willing to entertain the idea but I would have an inspection done irrespective. If you keep meticulous records about what you've undertaken and can provide this to a buyer or to use as part of an independent inspection, that would give a lot of reassurance. Certainly enough to pay for an inspection if the car passed my own inspection and if I felt that you were knowledgeable, capable and genuine in your reasons for doing the work yourself.
If you do the work yourself, you're asking prospective purchasers to 'buy' the owner as well as the car.
All interesting points, I purchased a 996T month or so back now. I was seriously considering a complete fluid change myself, some of which is ahead of schedule but this thread has put me off entirely!
Just like the OP my car has complete OPC service history so I may keep it that way. I may still fix any faults where I can and carry out intermediate oil services, that shouldn't do any harm should it? (Assuming the stamps are kept within tolerances)?

FWIW I don't think on say an 8-10 yr old car an full OPC history would add any real value to a car over one that has full history but with a mix of OPC/indie unless someone wanted to put an Porsche wty on it. There will be plenty of 'savvy' owners who get the services for the stamps & then either change things like discs/pads etc. themselves or using a trusted local garage & keep the receipts as proof. although the OPCs are trying to woo customers back with reduced servicing costs & the lure of trying new cars as courtesy cars.
I could understand if the OP wanted to put in an additional fluid change inbetween OPC services themselves especially if the car was driven all year round (rather than laid up for the winter months) & cant see that being detrimental to resale?
As as aside, I have a friend with one of the first mk1 Boxster S with full OPC history which until recently included even buying tyres from them.....we managed to stop him buying tyres from the OPC though they still service it. In comparison there is another who is claiming poverty & has not had his 996 serviced for 2 yrs & drives it daily...Im trying to point out the short sighted nature of his maintenance policy (or lack of currently)

Thanks for all your comments,
Just the sort of responce i thought i would get, so i will be keeping up the opc history for now and if i decide to keep the car long term then i will look for a good indy.
I would also value a respected Indy as much, if not more than an OPC.Just the sort of responce i thought i would get, so i will be keeping up the opc history for now and if i decide to keep the car long term then i will look for a good indy.

But that was not what people advised. As they suggested and I endorse, go down the good indy route. With a car of that age OPC service unless in support of some kind of OPC warranty is an utter waste of good money.xftdr said:

With a car of that age OPC service unless in support of some kind of OPC warranty is an utter waste of good money. The only reason i thought of servicing the car myself is my son is a audi main dealer tech and would cost me next to nothing but like you have all said i would have to sell the car cheaper so in the long run i would not be saving any money unless i keep the car for another 10 years or so then it would'nt really matter because the car wont be worth much anyway ( unless it becomes a future clssic)
So what i have decided is to have the servicing done at opc or indy to keep up the history but other things like disc and pads and other bits, example only yesterday my alternator stopped charging so we got a exchange genuine bosch unit from euro car parts £270 trade and fitted it in 1 hour opc wanted £800 just for the same alternator, i will just get my son to do all these sort of bits and just keep the reciepts, that should save me a lot of money in the long run and i am sure that would not put off any buyers in the future and to be honest i trust my son to do the job with more care taken for my pride and joy than i would any other tech.
