991 RSR will run in 2013
Discussion
Holy out of the blue batman!!
Had a release this afternoon that Porsche are going to run the 991 RSR in 2013 at Le Mans as a factory team in GTE class.
They must be feeling confident with the new car if they are going to run it themselves rather than through a customer team. All testing and development has and will be done in house by Porsche Motorsport. incredible as it is to believe, 1998 was the last time they ran as a factory team.
Apparently they are also planning on running the new car, again as a factory team, in the WEC in 2013 though ive no details on whether select races or full season.
I also have some tasty info ref the 991 Cup but its not official yet so will wait for now.

porsche are using Manthey as the factory team. they used Manthey when the 997 rsr was introduced as well
also felbermayer have been doing testing on this for a while now, so i'd expect them to be running it at some point this year too.

i personally don't understand how porsche can race a gt3 rsr when there isn't a road going version to homologate it yet.
the biggest question is, will the the new car have direct injection? I think it needs it to get anywhere near the ferrari on fuel consumption and pace.

Yes you are correct. This is nothing new for Porsche. Furthermore, they have been saying for months that they would enter a factory effort at Le Mans (2013) in order to prepare the "works" team for the big 2014 LMP1 program.also felbermayer have been doing testing on this for a while now, so i'd expect them to be running it at some point this year too.

As for the homologation: As we all know, the ACO/FiA are able to grant any waivers that they so which (BMW was racing a car that not only violated the rules until they were later changed, but the car had absolutely nothing to do with the road version (engine moved back, etc)
Also - the actual wording of the 2012 rules are not very clear (at least to me). They seem to suggest that there is a one year period available to get production of 100 cars.
"A regular production implies a permanent implementation of the means required to produce a minimum of 1 car per week for the "Big Manufacturers" and one car per month to the "Small Manufacturers". If the production is not respected, the ACO will suspend the homologation of the car the year after. The suspension of the homologation will cease once the production delay has been made up. It will be permitted to compete with the car as soon as a minimum of 100 road cars for the "Big Manufacturers" and 25 road cars for the
"Small Manufacturers" will be produced".

If that is indeed the case, then in theory it should be running the 3.8L engine and not the 4.0
Also - I just heard that the GT3 (road going) will be presented in November 2013
when porsche first started using the 4.0 in the rsr there was no road car 4.0 for quite some time. Also - I just heard that the GT3 (road going) will be presented in November 2013

Correct, that's why I said "in theory". There was a waiver given to Porsche, with the understanding that the 4.0L would be homologated later. (it took about 1 year for commercialization)Latest news: Press intro is at Geneva 2013. First deliveries in Germany July 2013.

Is that necessarily the case? I was under the impression that engine homologation was separate and that Porsche if they so desire (which is reputedly the case) can run the Mezger derived engine from the old car in a new chassis for many years after it ceases to be used in a production model. This tallies with what I have heard about the road car 991 GT3 using the new block design, but the racing flavours all being due to continue with the existing motor. Can someone with the rule book and preferably some contacts in the right place confirm? Also - I just heard that the GT3 (road going) will be presented in November 2013
Unrelated - could this be a response to the Flying Lizard team leaving the marque (to boost confidence of other customers) or conversely could their non-inclusion in this programme be the reason that they departed? Just wondering...
