New car time. Almost determined not to have another Porsche (Boxster, 993, Cayman, 996, 997 Turbo, 997.2 GT3, 997 C2S PDK so far).
Then I had a 991 on overnight test. Screw the journos, in the real world this car is sensational! Went in next day and did a deal on the demo car. So rather than the Vantage (awesome looks and character, but not half the car) or California (closer but worried about image and the extra cash) I'm staying in the family.
- looks - platinum silver. Just grew and grew on me throughout the 24hrs. Started off wanting the sport wheels, in the end really like the standard ones (much nicer than most recent standard wheels).
- build / feel - noticeable step-up over 997. Thunk from the doors, smooth click from the indicators. Still plastic sun visors. Grrr.
- pace - not 997 turbo quick in the real world where you can't fully exploit the handling gains, but noticeably quicker than 997 Gen Ii.
- sound - not keen on the piped into cab effect. May put sports exhaust on at later date if I feel car needs a refresh.
-PDK - much improved. Made the 7 speed vantage look stone age. Personally I thought the Aston 'box was atrocious. Don't have sport chrono, don't think I'm going to need it.
- handling / feel - yes, it feels more like a "normal" car to drive, less of the 911 driving style required. However, it is still great fun to drive and ability to carry higher entry speeds makes it much quicker. Don't know what people are complaining about.
- "the extras" - new PCM great, love LCD display in dials, new Bose works well, visible parking display much improved over audio only, dynamic lights made me a little sea sick. Especially when pressing on.
- public response - mates love it, subtlety of changes causes double take from interested passers by.
Also got promise of very early Turbo delivery in the deal.
. Now that is going to be EPIC!
