Howdy folks. A few quick questions which i hoped someone may be able to help with:

1. Took a 355 for a test drive y/day. Have all Italians got long arms or short legs or do 348/355 steering wheels adjust for reach?? (still don't know which model to go for)

2. The owner said he had a valve (clearly seen in rear of engine bay) wired open which was some form of exhaust by pass or cold air valve. He stated it bypassed the cats and i didnt want to have a stand up argument that it didnt. What is this valve, why is it wired open and if its cos its broke, how much to replace??

Thanks in anticipation. Clarky.

I think my 355 steering wheel only adjusted for tilt not reach.

The bypass valve does indeed bypass the cats when its open. Personally I prefer to have it operating properly. The car will idle loudly and will not transform properly to the lovely hollow sound... Plus there's the MOT thing too, IIRC.

Its 900 odd quid for the part I think and Carl Verdi fit mine in much less than an hour.

Knock off a grand if the bypass valve isnt working. Get the car properly inspected, it'll cost you two hundred odd quick and is well well worth it. Carl Verdi does inspections, as do Ferrari dealers. The 101 check I think its called.

Indeed I confirm that short arse is indeed correct

The steering adjusts for only rake....but i find it is ok.... Ali had to drive wearing stilts...

THe By pass valve may be wired open for two reasons..

1. It makes the car idel louder like a challenge car and contrary to Ali's comment it will still howl but does so immediately rather than around the 3.5- 4k rev mark.

2. It is probably wired open as it might not be working properly...even when they are working properly they rattle at idle and can be annoying...and sometimes when they start to go wrong people wire them open ( I have before now)

It does most certainly not bypass the cats as the cats FYI are just infront of the manifolds as you look a the engine from the rear contained in the single section of pipe where all the pipes join together... so he is talking absolute pants....onyl way of bypassing the cats is taking them out....

As confimred above - expect a £900 bill for a new one.....

Basically the cheapskates wire them open. I prefer the sound of the car coming on song at 4k, not just starting off with a howl that gets louder.

Seriously? I always thought, and was led to believe, that the bypass valve sent gases away from cats? Why is it called a cat bypass valve then? Although what you say, and recalling from memory the layout, it should be impossible to bypass as the manifolds lead out to exit exhaust, which is where the switch from one exit to another takes place. Cats are much before all that? Hmm, must ask Verdi about that one, and the point of it all.

Stop shagging all the time and come out one night. Punk.
