22k miles on my 2008 and the car starts making this rather worrying noise.

Anyone got any ideas?

The audio is not very loud but what I can hear doesn't sound good at all. It sounds very much like an older Boxster I heard running on a lift in a dealer's service bay that proved to have a bad IMS bearing.http://youtu.be/0645faJRLJc

As others have wisely counseled you, do not start the engine again. Get the car flat bedded to a place you have researched *before hand* that you know is capable of advising you and doing a proper repair should that be the way to go.
Do not rush into things. This is the time to take your time to give you time to digest all the info you will be assaulted with to make the best decision for you.

There is a school of thought that very early 997.1s (i.e. first year or so of production) suffered higher IMS failure rates than laterly produced 997.1's due to a modification that was introduced early on in the model's life. However it seemingly never eliminated the problem fully on 997.1s. Whether that carries over to the Boxter I don't know.Edited by 911 (997) on Sunday 25th November 20:56

I'd put money on that not being an IMS bearing. Actually it sounds more like a randy chicken in an oil drum. Apparently.
As suggested - don't start it again - get it trailered to a decent Porsche specialist like Hartech, Autofarm, RPM or Revolution.
Chris - It's exactly the noise Loggies car was making when he binned his car at Silverstone. Big end failure. As suggested - don't start it again - get it trailered to a decent Porsche specialist like Hartech, Autofarm, RPM or Revolution.
If the retaining cap stud shears the result is usually a large oil leak from the flange bore (hence my question) and as toenheel says the nut pings around behind the flywheel; if the bearing fails and the stud survives the intermediate shaft has free movement where the bearing used to hold it secure, the shaft flailing about causes the noise

As above, would get it recovered and checked out ASAP. Good luck and hope not as bad as it sounds (which is very bad).
