I have read the ongoing feud re 996 vs 993. Early 996's are, for me becoming more attractive. I like the Amber's , the clean lines and the fact they are so cheap. The 3.4 received rave reviews when new as well. A nice, well maintained car that preferably had a manual gearbox and one pair of cheeks sitting in it from new is an appealing, if unlikely purchase. Certainly as I could buy two of that car and have change for what my 993 is likely worth.

Anyway, I don't want to praise or bash either car. More interested in discussing the next 993 which is, surely, going to be the 997 gen 2. The 993 was made between 94 and 98 ( I know some 993s were registered in 99 but don't split hairs) and is " perceived" as the evolution of the breed. Prices high, years later for the look, heritage and the rareness. You can't argue with limited supply, it keeps values high.

The 997 gen 2 has much of the look of the 993. The modern dash with integrated phone and nav, with a proper exhaust from the factory, faster and more economical. These were also made for a relatively brief period as per 993's just 3 or 4 years. They benefit from the newer engines so the m96 dramas are no more and the Carrera qualifies for, relatively, cheap tax.

In a few years these are the cars 911 hunters will want the most. Discuss....

Not so sure.
I think it was the whole aircooled thing that's made the values what they are.
Just my opinion but if the 997 is ever worth decent money it will only be the Mezger engined ones regardless of DFI reliability.
Only a guess though, don't want to cause a scrap here too smile

I would agree with this, even though I own a 997.1 C2S

I think the 993 will always demand good money (for good examples) and the 996 and 997 (except GT* cars) will never be in the same league.

997 C2S PDK...I reckon. Totally modern- looks great (great mix of 993 and 991), drives well, no IMS issues to deal with and still has hydrualic steering

Remember 997's will be 996 prices in a few years time.
I don't think any "newer" 911 will reach 993 prices unless its a special or you wait a long time.
The air cooled cars will always be the ones to buy for a faster increase in value.

Shhhhh. I have an eye out for a tidy 3.4, ambers, 17s, black or midnight/ocean blue, sensible miles.

They were built in decent numbers, but the 3.4s were only built for a few years and most are leggy and tired.

I want one because I want one, but the more I look the more I reckon good ones are rare and won't be cheap forever.

I agree with the above post.
How many nice 3.4's are left in an unmolested spec?

I actually think they are more appealing to a vanilla 993

I've always loved the look of the standard 996, standard wheels ect.
Good luck in your search. Hope to be looking myself one day !
I drove a 993 at the Porsche Silverstone track and got out thinking don't believe the hype. For me just not worth 2.5 X the cost of a 996

What a curious thing to post. Did a 993 owner run off with your Mrs or something?

As already mentioned on another thread Paul Stephens is planning a 'new' 993 build I gather.
Even better

Why do you have a slow and heavy car in your fantasy garage?

Agreed my wifes C2S tip felt heavy and slow compared to my 993GT2 but I expected that.
I've seen you like the old stuff. I guess you had a duff experience.
A 993 turbo 4 feels a lot lighter than a 964 3.6 turbo but it isn't as we know it weighs a fair bit more. I guess that has a lot to do with the feel through the steering.
A very good friend of a mate wanted to by a 993 a good few years ago but he did not know exactly what he wanted. We went to Paragon, good friends of mine and he drove six different 993's. 2's and 4's, cab's and a targa. All narrow bodied mind. They just gave me the keys and let me and Bob get on with it. He bought a manual 993 Carrera 4 in the end as that is what he felt most comfortable in.
As I have said before the quickest normally aspirated 911 I have ever driven, bog standard was a pre varioram 993 tiptronic. It absolutely flew.
