Hi all, as the title says, I have bought a 996 Turbo from the good folk at RSJ. I'm really looking forward to getting behind the wheel, albeit at the most inappropriate time of year! I told Joel (at RSJ) that I would probably save the car until the good weather arrived, he just laughed and said " Drive it whatever the weather!"

I don't know what other people's experiences are in dealing with them but I can tell you I have been really impressed so far. We talked through various options, Turbo, 996C4S, 997 C2S etc, finally settling on the 996T. Bearing in mind I am (unfortunately) confined to a wheelchair, they let me climb in and out of cars, trying the wheelchair in the cars too! I was allowed into the workshops to see underneath it, along with being shown the detailed inspection sheet, showing the things they were not happy with and were therefore replacing. They are arranging for hand controls to be fitted, which leaves them with a lot of travelling to do in two cars, as part of the deal. I just pay for the car and the controls.

Credit where credit's due. If I continue to get this level of service, I will be an even happier man!

I look forward to having a good old chin wag on here as soon as I pick my new baby up, which should be during the first week in December as long as the control-fitting goes to plan. I bet I will be the only person who has 0-100% throttle in around 28mm of travel....Gulp. I hope my ex Motorcycle racer reactions are still up to scratch!http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/12.gif
I must admit, I hope it is a dry day when I pick it up though...... Will keep you posted.

Great post! Good luck with your new purchase. I must admit I keep thinking about upgrading my 993 for a 996 tt or a 997 c2s. I hope to be in a position to go for a few test drives at some point. At the moment a new house seems to be hoovering up all my time and funds! Enjoy your new car. All the best

Congratulations Mike. I'm sure your ex motorcycle racing skills will do you just fine. Its funny when you put it into perspective. But riding a motorcycle is an awful lot about hand skills. Never thought to translate that into a car.

Graeme, I have never thought of it like that before. I hope you are right! My previous track day car had a steering wheel type throttle, contained within the wheel itself, along with a left-hand operated brake. That car was a manual, this one is a Tiptronic, so I have gone for a simple push-pull to accel/brake. In my previous car, it was amazing how well my brain adapted to the various functions, but being older now, I can't be bothered with all that malarky, so have opted for an auto. There is however, a world of difference between the two cars. The other one was front wheel drive and weighed less than 600 kilos.

With the value of this car, I doubt it will see track action too..... Thanks for the comments guys, will keep you informed of my progress.

Mike.

wish you all the best Mike with your new 996 turbo. Great cars. Would recommend driving in all weathers 100% (except heavy snow of course). They are great in the wet and amazing in the dry.

Have fun and enjoy!

Well done Mike!

There's not a lot wrong with a 996T. Loads of owners on here, full of experience and good advice.

I'm sure the car will be perfect coming from RSJ.

Enjoy! smile

Hi Mike and many congratulations.

My wife & I test drove our turbo at Malton in December 2 years ago, with deep snow all over.

The car was brilliant and very sure footed, so much more assured than we were expecting.

Snow also fell on collection day too, but we took the long & interesting route home.

These cars are really accomplished and the performance envelope so large I really would suggest a track day would be the ideal place to explore. I did Stowe circuit at Silverstone in the February and had a ball.

I also recall meeting a guy who ran a business converting cars for hand control as he (Dave of the Top Gear Nurburgring MZ3 Coupe crash fame) did several trackdays and was a great laugh too. He did make me promise never to take my bike to the Ring and I didn't think it appropriate to ask why.

Enjoy the car & let us know how you're getting on.

Thanks StuB. That is very interesting re the 'Ring guy. I did loads of Track Days in my previous car but my back is in pretty poor shape now, so I'm not sure it would handle being thrown around. My car does have sports seats, which I found gripped me quite nicely, so I will see. There is some YouTube footage of a guy driving a GT3 with the same controls I used to have on my previous car. Take a look if you can find it, very informative.

A contributor on another Forum suggested a CATDT day at Millbrook. I may well try this route first, though I'm sure the TD bug will strike with a vengeance again soon! I just have to be mindful of 2X Titanium rods and 10X Titanium bolts holding my back together! I don't really fancy going through that again.

So glad you are enjoying your car in all weathers, that gives me great confidence.

A quick message also to SUPERMONO. Did you race Ducati's version, or something like a TigCraft/Spondon/Harris/Hejira/Over or similar? I was quite involved in that series for a few years, back in 1993 ish. Not as a racer but as a Tuner (for my sins!).

Regards to all, will keep you all posted once I have picked the car up from RSJ.
