what size wheels / tyres are people using?

Was looking at a set of 17" cup 2 wheels. 7" front / 9" rear and front tyres are ok but rear tyres in 255/40/17 are very hard to come by.

Any suggestions?

Also what is the correct offset for a 17x9j rear wheel for a 993 narrow body?

Thanks in advance

mytyres.co.uk seem to have an ok selection for 255/40/17 in Falken, Vredestein, kumho, toyo and continental. From £105 to £197 per tyre. I ran Falkens last year on my 993. Worked ok, but no real snow to try them in sadly!

I want the conti but no where has stock.

What wheels / offsets are you running?

Lots of conflicting info on what I need.

My 993 has 7 ET 55 front and 9 ET 55 rear Cup 2's and runs 205/50 front and 255/40 rears. I ran Dunlop winters in those sizes last year but this year I've bought some used 996 alloys for them, which will be fitted to my 996.

Interesting that that states it's a list of "approved tyres" when many aren't N rated. scratchchin

Also, it's odd that they quote exactly the same rim width and offset for the rear of a narrow and widebody 993. I was pretty sure the extra track width came from the wheel offset, not from having completely different suspension parts?

My thoughts too.

Perhaps the N ones are hard to get, so they are happy with others.

To the OP I used a spare set of targa wheels on my 993 (it was a Targa). Sorry I don't know the offset. Does mytyres not have a stop of contis? I had no issues at all with the Falkens.

Ah see thats one of the things that confused me. I saw this a while ago and it says 9 ET 70 rear but then someone else here says ET55 rear?

The ET55's on mine are standard and original but if you got 70's you could fit 15mm spacers to put them in the same position.

So basically any info that says a 9" wheel should be ET70 on the rear is incorrect and this will sit too far into the arch and I should 100% get a 9" ET55 rear?

It's just a cosmetic thing I think. Both ET55 and ET70 fit but the ET55 looks much better.

I've got Nokian N rated winter tyres on the rear 9" wheels 255/40/17. They're about 4 years old although I don't think they are still manufactured.

What does the manual suggest?

I once put some standard 993 16" wheels (no idea on widths sorry) on a 964 and the rears rubbed on the inside of the wheelarches and it needed 15mm spacers fitting - maybe they were a 70 offset? I know that 993's do differ from 964s and 996s (which take the same sizes AFAIK).

My Nokians are mounted on 996 10-spoke 17" wheels on my 993. The wheels have the same offset as 993 Cup2s ie. 55 front and rear.

I believe the manual suggested that for winters a 993 should be run on 225/45 on an 8" rim at the rear (7" 205/50 at the front), however I've seen later Porsche winter tyre recommendations be the same size as summer tyres ie. 255/40 on a 9" rim.
