I've always used apple computers and, in recent years, have used iPhones as my smartphone of choice. This works great in my 997 GTS, integrating fully with the stereo and with Bluetooth, but I quite fancy switching to a Samsung Galaxy S3, or Galaxy Note. Does anyone know if this will integrate in the same way (either natively or with an app), or does it not play well with Porsche's tech?

I know that I could ask Porsche, but I'd prefer to hear from people who've done it themselves. Can it be done, is it proper integration (playlists and tracks showing on the screen)?

Edited to add, I know that it'll synchronize over Bluetooth but it's the plug-in music synchronisation and charging that I'm interested in.

Ive got a Galaxy S3 and a 987 Boxster with PCM and have only been able to listen to music through the cars speakers with no playlists/ control other than on the phone screen. I just keep an old Nano in the car and get full control that way.

I own a 997 and a Galaxy SII.

I have absolutely no idea what any of the stuff above means!

I have an S3 and a 997.2. Integration isn't very good, phone works as normal, but music is a pain. But who cares, the phone is so much better in every way (and I'm a mac addict)

I have found a way to play pod casts via blue tooth to the car, but only in mono, which is fine for speech.

I have an old 30gb ipod plugged in to the car now and it works much better than having to plug in the iphone all the time...

Thanks. I think that it's time to dip my toes outside the apple world, then. Maybe this could be moved to a new forum, so I can start asking how it all works, and whether to get an S3 or a Note.

I've owned the Note and the S3, unless you absolutely need the extra size offered from the note, go with the S3, possibly the best phone I have ever owned.

Im anti-apple because I just refuse to be a lemming, I refuse to pay way over the top for hardware that just doesn't warrant the price tag and then there's morals, I cant get over that fact that a company with more money than the US government would prefer to see suicide nets put up at the factory that produces their ipad/phone rather than dish out a slice of the apple pie and make the working conditions better.

Don't downgrade from Apple to Samesung. You'll regret it sooner or later.

Or you'll wake up and realise that after spending a truckload of money on overpriced hardware, its not really yours, you can only do with it, what apple say you can do with it. Then you'll go back to sleep, back to your nightmare of those poor Chinese workers jumping off the balcony, but then you'll remember that Apple was kind enough to buy them suicide nets and all is well in the world again.

Sleep well! tongue out

Good comment, and I fully agree.

On the subject, I own an ancient 996 and need to upgrade the head unit for it to work with my HTC phone

I want to do the same in my 2002 996 turbo but it has MOST so my options are either limited or spend a stupid amount of money which I would rather spend on maintaining the car.

That view's quite amusing to me. I've used apple since it was very much a minority system that hardly anyone knew about, when every desktop in the world was a PC, and Apple had a tiny, tiny market share.

Basically, when I started, it was far to say "I use Apple as I refuse to be a lemming".

I'm not about to give up my iPad, iMacs, iPod, iBook, or MacBooks, I'm not changing religion here, just buying a new phone.

Anyway, I got a Note II, which seems quite nice. It's quite shiny, and has some lights on it.

Now, what on earth do I do? Where do I buy the apps, which ones do need, how do I get it to play nicely with iTunes?

I kind of agree, but I think it is a little naive to think that Samsung/LG/HTC treat their 3rd party employees over there any better.

For me, there is little doubt that Android is the way forward and I will jump ship next time. At the moment, I cannot find an Android phone that I like as much as the iPhone and compatibility with accessories isn't quite where I'd like it to be.

The Dension Gateway 500 has been rock solid with my iPhone and iPod Classic, and it is that, together with Airplay around the house that is keeping me with Apple for now.

Next year, I think it will be quite different, although I do worry a bit that car manufacturers seem to insist on making everything 'ipod/iphone compatible' instead of a universal solution. Surely this will change when Android reaches evne higher market share?

Can someone dig me up the "Oh no, not this st again" meme - I simply can't be bothered. Apple's suppliers did have a slew of such stories about them. At the same time there were similar stories (IIRC more child exploitation than suicides on the wires when I was following it) concerning Samsung's own factories, so it appears that they are/were all at it in Asia and at least the fruit company had a shard of deniability about it, unlike the unimaginative Koreans. I really can't be bothered to do the residual value argument or the vast majority of Android devices being on years old obsolete versions of their OS or the tale of my friend who has vowed never to buy from Samsung again after an experience with a bricked S3 that Samsung couldn't/wouldn't resolve either, so can we stay on the original topic of the thread, which is:

Androids work with the hands free bluetooth integration in the 997 but are otherwise a poor companion to the system. If you want anything beyond the phone, stay with the iPhone or just leave an old or cheap iDevice in the cubby to act as your music source.

We do not need yet another juvenile "my telephone is better than your telephone" thread, fresh from the primary school playground. Take that rubbish back to General Gassing where it is easily ignored please.

Of course, it was a little tongue in cheek, working conditions have also been bad at Samsung as I fear they are at any manufacturing plant in China (after all foxconn make a lot of stuff for a lot of companies) however I feel like Samsung are much more committed to sorting the issues out rather than sweeping them under the carpet, thats just a personal view though.

Don't get me wrong, back in the day Apple were a very different company. Back then you're right, it wasn't the norm and most people didnt have a clue, they didnt sell stuff purely because it looked good and had a shiny interface. These days their market share is driven largely by ill informed users who want an iphone/pad because everyone else has one so it MUST be the best.

I'm less anti-apple when it comes to desktops, its this whole iphone/pad thing that gets to me, an iphone/pad is not some elite piece of equipment that outperforms any other device available despite what the fanboys want to tell themselves.

That said, I still wouldnt buy an apple desktop myself, I can build an intel PC and hack a copy of OSX on it, I'll have paid a lot less money and will I have any less of a machine than if I'd have bought a mac? No, on the contrary.

Your apps will come from the google play store, so you'll need to setup a google account (but you should have done that during the initial setup?). Only you know what apps you need, much like the apple store, theres a huge amount of apps for android and again, much like iphone/pad apps, many of them are completely useless smile

As for playing with itunes, im sure theres a few apps but have a look at double twist, I've never used it as I dont use itunes myself smile

Sorry fella, troll boots were a bit tight biggrin

But I really have read too many of those threads. They are almost as common a subject as people talking up the value of 996 GT2s or claiming that the Boxster Spyder is anything like as fast as a GT3 <lays bait>

Thanks. I'm currently struggling through what to do to get the best from the Note, and am planning on using my old Nano for the car. I just need to remember to bring it in from the car to sync it so that my podcasts and playlists up to date.
