There has been a lot of chat on the forum of late about pdk and manual gear boxes. Very interested in the different view points of PHers for and against. For me the Manual gear box is the only option for a sports car purely from the involvement and joy of being in control of the cars input. I understand that the PDK is faster, but is it as enjoyable as driving a manual?

What would your choice be?

Both so different, you have to make up your mind, its a very personal choice and can be dependant on the usage of the car or many other reasons, I was going manual this time but personally felt the new PDK was so good when I tried it I changed my mind, only you can decide for you smile

You really need to try both.

The PDK is very very good but of its a manual that you want...

Depends which PDK you are talking about.

The 997 PDK was a bit... er... leisurely. But it sounded the death knell for the manual.

The 991 PDK is sorted. And it is better than the manual. There is no rational argument that it is not.

This argument will rage on forever. It's digital vs analogue. Vinyl vs mp3. LCD watch vs mechanical movement.

Make your own mind up.

But for me, I want to drive. I love computers, but they will never drive for me.

A fully controlled and mechanical driving experience or a button?

I am a dedicated manual fan, but bought a PDK gts as I drive into NYC every day and I have to say its fantastic. Would always have the manual if it was a weekend car, but as a daily driver where there is usually some traffic, PDK is the one

I understand the reason for your compromise, I really do.

But I won't. I just won't. It's selling out. It's giving up.

For me the choice was usage, as I use the car as a daily driver and around 20k per year PDK is preferable, its not a track or weekend car had it been then I'd have gone manual, my thought though is there is not much involvement of gears needed cruising on the M6 smile I went PDK.

Best thing is to try both preferably for a reasonable amount of time,

Indeed it is. Folk now ride horses for leisure and use tractors for work.

As everyone else has said; PDK for the daily grind, manual for the weekend.

Ha ha, touché. Well speaking personally I would not buy another manual car for the weekend or any other time (unless for a small pool car) because the PDK does everything better. If you absolutely must feel more engaged the car can be used in manual.

I don't ride horses either.

Interested on you comment re going manual for a track car as this is where PDK is faster, hence the speculation around the new GT3 being PDK only.

I can (almost) understand the desire for a manual for the weekend,, but why opt for a car knowing that a driver of comparable skill in the same car with the PDK box will be quicker round a given track?

If you want to be engaged leave the PDK box in manual.....

You guys will be abandoning indicators next and sticking you're arms out the windows for a turn, just to feel more engaged..... there are so many things in a modern car that reduce your direct driving involvement, power assisted steering & brakes the list goes on and on.

It's just called progress some people embrace, some people don't smile

This speed argument is the one used by many. Faster is better. Computers are faster than humans. Yes they can be.

My point is that there's less joy when computers are doing it for you. It's like having a health and safety manager between your actions and the car reactions.

It comes down to how much you want to be involved in the driving process. Heel and toeing is a large part of the process of driving quickly and to give this over to a computer might be faster but the price is too high fun wise. PDK is impressive yes, but there is no reward. The more electronics take over mechanical action at high limits, the less reward there is.

It's why many people are increasingly going to early 911's to rediscover the pure and simple act of driving.

You simply don't have the flexibility in an auto that you have in a manual.

PDK's and alike always work sequentially....manuals, you can jump and skip around the box all you like...plus they are more fun and I personally feel more in control of the car.

However, I do understand why others may prefer the PDK etc... just not for me.

I adore my PDK 'box. When I'm really on it, there's just as big a satisfaction for me in getting the changes and lines correct as there is in a manual.

Each to their own though, and I'm glad I still have my MX-5 for when I fancy a blat in a manual car.

Do you think that the PDK is more fun than a manual, and if so why?
