smelly shoes

Last week the roads to work flooded and I ended up cycling through about two feet of water. Obviously with my natural perspiration and rather a lot of crud filled water getting in my cycle shoes smell a bit. I've already washed them out with some persil and cold water but its not helped a lot.

Currently they are winding up the missus as they are in the bath for their second wash with a few hours soak.

Is there a better way? I'm afraid to put them in the washing machine like I do my trainers...

IME there's no problem with sticking them in the washing machine, both my current pairs have been in plenty of times.

Bunged mine in the washing machine last week as they were stinking out the house, they came out looking like new, so I really wouldn't worry about doing that. Have put shoes through the wash a few times before as well, with no adverse effects.

Apparently baking powder is supposed to be a good way to deal with the stink, not tried that myself though

Well they came out the bath smelling a lot better than before. Drying them off above the radiator gives a semi clean aroma. Will bung them in the machine for next time then
