Boxster Spyder Warranty
Discussion
My Spyder is almost two years old. Just had first service and brake fluid change (£500). Also had the 111 point check - no problems. I have extended the warranty for two years (£1,320). I have 14 days to change mind on Porsche Warranty - just wondered if anyone else has done this or used alternative warranty providers. At £660 per annum, it seemed 'reasonable' - but just wanted views (i.e. is the Porsche Warranty any good or do they try to wriggle out of everything). Car only done 4k so not used heavily. Any thoughts much appreciated.
Don't change your mind-keep the warranty. When I had my 1st Boxster some years ago I did the same and wondered the same. The Porsche club members said don't bother. I wrote to Quentin Willson at The Sunday Mirror and he said they were worth their weight in gold. I bought the warranty. The car had it's 1st service and the OPC informed me it needed a new gearbox. It had only done 14k miles and I couldn't tell. But what would a new gearbox have cost? Plus you get the breakdown cover. A no-brainer in my opinion.
I'll always keep/extend the OEM warranty. My CR has warranty to 2015 and if I am keeping the car afterwards will renew it then.
My last last car was a E93 M3. The 4.0 engine popped just out of warranty and caused me months of pain and frustration not to mention the loss of ££. It was a harsh lesson after thinking, its a BMW, they never go wrong and people saying, extended warranties, they aren't worth it.

Hi, I didn't take the third year warranty at the time because they wanted about £800 from memory and I did not know if I would have the car that long. Also, because I had the 111 point check as part of the first service, they did not charge this time. hence, it made sense to defer the decision on the warranty - if that makes sense.
Also, in response to the BMW point, I also had a BMW that needed a new ECU and 'Warranty Direct' were not wanting to pay for that (when they explained their myriad small print exclusions).

Ady - Warranties are always a vexed question, but if your car had only done 14,000m. and the gearbox problem was discovered at the first service, surely it would have been covered by the 2 year original warranty in any event.
My then new 986 "S" warranty expired 10 years ago, and had I taken out a further warranty to cover the intervening years up to now, it would have cost about £8000. The car has run faultlessly with no replacement parts other than tyres and an annual service. Always a tricky decision, and lady luck can be cruel!

If it were me then if we are talking about a PDK car I would warranty it (OPC) and if it were not, money in the bank and see where it goes. The hesitancy over PDK is simply because it is an unknown that if a systemic issue did emerge with would cost a lot of cash to resolve. Once you are through about 6 years after it was launched I reckon that you could take a more pragmatic view on it. I have a pretty high degree of confidence in the rest of the expensive bits for the 987.2 that I am unconvinced that long term you will recoup the warranty costs (assuming that you will keep it for a while, which you should because the Spyder is a damn fine car).

It was back in 2006 and if I remember correctly the 1st service took place just after 2 years and I think I'd already bought the warranty, but you're right; it's just like any insurance. My then new 986 "S" warranty expired 10 years ago, and had I taken out a further warranty to cover the intervening years up to now, it would have cost about £8000.
