Checkout Fabspeed - they do the best air boxes and filters: BMC, as used in F1.

From what I've read on the Pelican forums it sounds like there's no power gain with K&N's - apparently 911 don't have any difficulty getting enough air in. Drilling the box might let cooler air in (and make a louder noise) - other than that all these things might just end up in a greater chance of dirt getting in to the engine.

They shouldn't allow more chance for dirt to get in, as a filter is still in the way.

All they do is allow more air flow in.

I have a drilled airbox and K&N, makes absolutely no performance difference as far as I can tell, slight increase in induction noise. I got it done when I had a sports exhaust fitted as it does no harm and saves on replenishing paper filters at 20 quid each every service.

Plus when I get my car Motec'd up, it may allow the engine to breath a fraction better, although it is fuelling that 964s struggle with (need uprated injectors above 300bhp), not breathing.

Good to see that you're thinking ahead there domster (above 300bhp........ ) - wouldn't want to think you were driving an underpowered 964 RS eh!!

Hi Domster, Good to hear you're still happy with the RS, I bet you still got the silly grin syndrome too! I don't drive an RS but still have my silly grin almost a year layer!

I spoke to a chap at Bramham Park a while back and he said If I changed the pipe(bypase and Cup) added a Hotwire and chip setup I could probably get 300bhp ... Sound about right?

I bought a cotton green air filter for my 3.2, which is of the same style as the K&N (lampshade shaped thing) and I noticed that the power increase at 4k rpm was smoothed out, not such a step up. I think that the power delivery has changed, increasing power and torque low down rather than offering an outright increase in power - although it is marginal. The main difference is the noise, it now hisses at idle, and sounds like a turbo spooling up when on the move.

It does highlight how weird the induction system is, as throttle position does not necessarily seem to indicate the amount of air flow through the filter - unless there is a leak somewhere?

Hi Richard

You may get 300bhp, but that would be very unusual. 280 should be possible, though.

Without changing the injectors, I am told it is impossible to get the 3.6 engine to or above 300bhp on a reliable dyno.

My RS with 270 something bhp was driven by someone who knows their stuff, and declared it 'faster than a hot film RS claiming 300bhp'.

Hot film isn't the panacea it is meant to be, by all accounts. It is good, but not that good, according to some. I looked into all sorts of mods before deciding on my current plan - Motec ECU and bigger injectors, fitted by Colin Belton from 930 Motorsport (320bhp, cost about 3.5-4k).

You are right about the grin

Cheers

PS If you get yourself to a meet at some point, you can sample the RS first hand if there's time. It is a league beyond even the standard C2 - and they are good, I know!
