Euro NCAP, great, independant tests of car safety, useful pressure group... OK. But the way there results are used is wrong and this is not really their fault but they could easily improve things... When ENCAP throws a car at a 'soft' wall, the wall is rigged to simulate a car of similar size, ok, but this means a Polo can get 4*, then a much larger MPV is thrown at the wall, the wall is twice as strong (for a car of twice the weight), this is ok as all MPV's get same treatment, if the MPV gets 2* this seems bad. But the test was completely different, Euro NCAP make this clear, but not all of the press bother, I have read articles from peole relieved to discover small cars are as safe as big cars, and so they've down sized (this is no bad thing but), the problem is these people are not being told the truth, that is not measured. So ok, if your buying an MPV use NCAP results as a guide, but not to decide between cars of different sizes (as some people now are)... this is miss leading the people who possibly rely on this information the most. Also how can anyhting be 100%, let alone the safety of a car??? Rant over.
