Slide scanning

Had a quick search and couldn't find a thread, but apols if it's been done recently...Mu Mum used to take slides ad nauseam and I've got boxes of the things. They're not all going to be worth it, but I was thinking of scanning some of the good ones and making some kind of digital files I can put on CD to show on her telly.
I found this online but reviews suggest the scnas are not very good (I'd like to save some good ones for myself and maybe print from them too at some point, although I guess I can save the best negs too...)
Any recommendations?

This comes up about 3 or 4 times a year but finding the threads may not be easy.
If you are just dealing with 35mm slides (or negatives iirc) then something like that device may well be a useful investment at the price.
Why?
Well from what I have read you get an instant scan, no messing, to a memory device and so can see what you have. Mostly they probably ar not too interesting - seems to be the normal way of things. But you get a reasoanbly instant return for not much money. And the resolution is fairly TV friendly in a way.
Any special ones you can consider whether you want to do more with them, either buying an external service from a specialist or, perhaps, getting a better scanning device (?) and repeating the process with the selected 'stars'.
That may require some specialist equipment, software and a learning curve to make the best of the slides. Depending on how many there are to do if you have a digital SLT camera you might get a slide sopier device to fit on a lens and simply photograph each image. Good for tens or hundreds, perhaps not so good for thousands simply because it will take time.
Quite a few people seem to be branding and selling that unit. You might be able to find somwhere that will demo is with your own slides so that you can make an informed decision.

A few Nikon Coolscans here around budget. No user experience to tell.
One of the Tog's here has one and tells me it's not a bad bit of kit.
He runs it on a mac but says the last OS it was geared for was 10.4
Not sure what it needs for Windows.

From what I recall the Coolscans are pretty good but drivers for them on recent operating systems may be a challenge. Not sure though. I have not checked for a while.
